Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) Hires Team From Loki Studios

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) has acquired another mobile company called Loki Studios.  This is the fourth company that Yahoo! acquired this month.  The others include Milewise, GoPollGo, and Astrid.  Yahoo! has added around 22 entrepreneurs to their mobile team through these acquisitions.  Loki Studios is known for creating mobile games.

AOL Reports Q1 2013 Revenues Of $538 Million

Media company AOL reported their first quarter financials today.  AOL’s revenues hit $538 million for the quarter, which is up from the same quarter one year earlier.  Net income increased 23% to $26 million.  The growth is largely due to increasing advertising revenue.  Total ad revenue grew to $359 million, up from $330 million in the same quarter one year earlier.  Global display ads increased 8% to $140 million.

Amazon Web Services Adds Node.js General Availability For Developers

Node.js is a server-side system that is used for writing scalable Internet applications.  Node.js programs are written on the server side using JavaScript with event-driven, asynchronous input/output (I/O) processing.  Created in 2009 by Ryan Dahl and sponsored by Joyent, Node.js is now available as a General Availability (GA) release through Amazon Web Services (AWS).  The AWS SDK for Node.js can be installed through npm.

‘Wolfenstein: The New Order’ Is Coming This Year

Bethesda has announced that a new version of Wolfenstein is coming this year.  Wolfenstein: The New Order will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles towards the end of this year.  The New Order takes place during an alternate history throughout the 1960s when the Nazis won World War II.

Consortium Of Investors Buy BMC Software For $6.9 Billion

BMC Software, Inc, (NASDAQ:BMC) has been acquired by a private investor group for roughly $6.6 billion in cash.  Based in Houston, Texas, BMC is known for creating system management software for businesses.  The deal is based on $46.25 per share, which is less than 2% above the company’s closing stock price of $45.42.

Acer Announces Aspire P3, Aspire R7, Iconia A1, and V Series Laptops

At an event in New York City, Acer announced a plethora of new products.  This includes the Aspire P3, Aspire R7, Iconia A1 tablet, and a new line of V-series laptops.  The P3 is an “ultrabook convertible,” meaning a device that can be turned into a laptop or tablet.  The R7 is a notebook that can be repositioned using Acer’s new “Ezel Hinge” to bring the display forward into different positions.  The Iconia A1 is an Android-powered 7-inch tablet.  The V series line of laptops are very customizable and feature Acer’s new Converter Port.

Pearson Acquires Learning Catalytics

Pearson, the large education company, has acquired Learning Catalytics.  Learning Catalytics was founded by three friends Gary King, Brian Lukoff, Eric Mazur at Harvard University.  Learning Catalytics is able to turn laptops, smartphones, and tablets into classroom engagement tools.

Business Insider Raises $5 Million From Jeff Bezos, Institutional Venture Partners, and RRE Ventures

Business Insider has raised $5 million in funding led by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com.  Business Insider was co-founded by formet Internet analyst Henry Blodget.  Bezos reads the website often and he is making the investment through Bezos Expeditions. This brings Business Insider’s total funding to $18.3 million.  RRE Ventures and Institutional Venture Partners also participated in this round.  Some of Business Insider’s earlier investors include Marc Andreessen and Ken Lerer, the co-founder of the Huffington Post.
