Amazon has announced that the 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet is available in over 170 countries and regions around the world. These devices are available for pre-order through Amazon.com and will start shipping on June 13th. The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD costs $284 and the 7-inch costs $214.
Earlier today, TechCrunch reported a rumor that Amazon is working on a $99 Kindle Fire HD which would have a 7-inch screen. TechCrunch’s source was an not cited. ”It’s not happening–we are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware,” said Amazon in a statement.
The Amazon.com Kindle Fire HD was the leading product that was sold by Amazon.com through the holiday season. The 8.9-inch tablet went for sale earlier last month. Fortunately Amazon.com is offering the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 to students at $50 off all month long. Amazon Student Members that have a Prime account are the only ones eligible for the deal.
The Amazon Appstore has recently announced that “app downloads in the Appstore have grown more than 500 percent over the previous year.” This is quite impressive considering that Amazon.com does not have a platform of their own for apps. They have essentially created a marketplace of Android apps called it the Amazon Appstore. A lot of that growth came from strong sales of the Amazon Kindle Fire line of tablets.
Amazon.com will be adding two new accessibility features on the Kindle Fire. The two new features are called Explore by Touch and Voice Guide. The features will be added to the 7-inch Kindle Fire and 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. These features already exist in Amazon.com’s larger tablets and will be added some time “early next year.”
Yesterday we wrote about how there will be no way to opt out of ads for “special offers” on the Kindle Fire HD. However Amazon.com just updated their terms about how you will be able to opt out of the ads. The price for doing so will be $15 for the life of the device.
