Actress and the UNICEF ambassador to the United States Alyssa Milano has partnered with Tonic.com to educate people about the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases. Milano is also aiming to raise $75,000 in donations for the cause. Tonic.com is a website for brands to engage consumers around positive actions. Alyssa Milano’s Hits Over $50,000 In Charity Water Donations With Help From Twitter

Alyssa Milano is a newly wed and she is getting close to turning 37 years old (December 19th). But Milano does not want any gifts. She wants people to donate to charity: water instead. Milano hopes that the cause will help bring safe water to 15 communities, 750 families, and 3,750 people.

“I’m giving up my 37th birthday to hopefully raise $50,000 for clean water projects and sanitation projects in developing nations,” said Milano in an interview with People. “And we’re so close – we’re so close!” Milano already raised close to $50,000 goal and hopes to get it to at least $75,000.

Milano gave props to her Twitter followers for the charity success. “I have almost a half a million followers, so it allows you to reach that many people. What happens that makes Twitter so powerful is even if a fifth of those people get the word out to the people that are following them, you’re really creating this amazing sort of cycle.”

Square Launches Today and Is Valuated At $40 Million

Square is a new mobile payment service that was founded by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey. Dorsey is best known for being a co-founder of Twitter too. Before the company started, Square raised $10 million in funding with a $40 million valuation. The lead investor of the $10 million funding round was provided by Khosla Ventures. This is former Facebook CFO Gideon Yu’s first major investment since joining Khosla in late August.

Square will allow businesses to accept credit card payments without contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs. Square also has photo verification of the credit card holder. The company also has a device with a chip in the form of an audio input jack that can act as a way to accept payments. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are already on board with Square.

Celebrity and power Twitter user Alyssa Milano of Who’s The Boss fame (pictured below) is also serving as an adviser to Square. Other advisers include Susan Wu (Ohai.com), Ted Wang (Twitter lawyer), Ryan Gilbert (Payment services entrepreneur and EIR at Venrock), Greg Kidd (Twitter angel investor), and Jeremy LaTrasse (Twitter Head of Ops).

Alyssa Milano Boos An iPhone App And Gets Attacked By The “Tweetie Mob”

Alyssa Milano is best known as Samantha on Who’s The Boss? and Phoebe Halliwell on Charmed. Milano has recently been very active on Twitter. Milano recently faced the wrath of the “Tweetie mob” when she retweeted the following message:
“Boooooo!!! RT @TwitterDispatch: Tweetie ‘Upgrade’ costs the same as buying new: http://j.mp/b6VgC”

Milano was referring to the Tweetie iPhone application which costs $2.99. Given Milano’s celebrity status, it turns out that many people did not like her reaction for having to pay for an iPhone app. Frommer of BusinessInsider bashed Milano for her remarks, but I disagree with him for doing that.

Milano is entitled to her opinion just as much as Frommer is. And for those developers complaining about more people needing to support them, develop high quality apps and you will get downloads. Tweetie is one of the top grossing applications on the Apple App Store so I’m sure whoever made it is doing very well financially now.
