Lenovo K91 Is The First Android Ice Cream Sandwich Smart TV

Lenovo has decided to enter the smart television market. At CES, they are showcasing the Lenovo K91 Smart TV that runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The K91 will be available in China first and it will spread to other countries throughout this year. Specifications of the K91 include the Qualcomm 8060 Snapdragon 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8 GB storage, 2GB SD card, 42″ or 50″ 3D LED screen options, 5 megapixel webcam for facial recognition (parental controls), and 3-axis gyro gamepad. Lenovo is also integrated cloud services for streaming TV shows. Instead of using the Google TV UI, Lenovo decided to heavily customize Android 4.0. [GigaOM]

Google Android Market Hits 400,000 Apps

The Google Android Market has surpassed 400,000 applications.  That means that 100,000 apps have been added between now and August 2011 and 200,000 more since April 2011.  Of these 400,000 applications, about 2/3 are available for free in the Android Market.  The percentage of free apps has grown month-over-month from 60% in April 2011 to 68% around the end of 2011.  Now there are about 100,000 publishers that are active in the application store. Fake Siri App Gets Added To Android

A company called Official App has added an app to the Android Market called Siri for Android. The funny thing about this app is that it simply opens the “Google Voice Actions” app within Android. Clearly this is a gag app and fortunately it is free. This app has been installed on between 1,000-5,000 phones. I doubt Google will remove the app since this is the type of thing an Android owner can use to show off if an iPhone 4S owner says “Look my phone has Siri!” [The Next Web]

The U.S. Patent and Trademark office has rejected Oracle’s patent claims against Google. On December 20th, the U.S. Patent office issued a rejection in the reexamination of Oracle’s U.S. Patent number 6,192,476. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had rejected 17 out of the 21 claims about the patent in discussion including 7 of the patent’s independent claims. Google Adds “Buy From Android Market” Link To Songs On YouTube

YouTube has been able to capitalize on music videos that have been uploaded to the website in a couple of ways. Advertising is the primary source of revenue and the other way was by providing affiliate links to AmazonMP3 and iTunes. Today when I was watching this music video was the first time I noticed a link to the Android Market music store. In the design, it looks like AmazonMP3 and iTunes have been placed in on the next line using a
tag. Google launched Google Music last month with EMI, Sony, and Universal on-board.

Samsung Galaxy S Smartphone and 7-Inch Galaxy Tab Will Not Be Getting Android 4.0 Update

Samsung has just announced some bad news for the people that own the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Tab tablet. These devices will not be getting Android 4.0. Although the numbers sold of the Galaxy Tab are unknown, we know that the Galaxy S has sold about 10 million units. The Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab are not getting Android 4.0 because it does not have enough RAM and ROM to run alongside TouchWiz. Many people bought the devices with the expectation that they came equipped with powerful enough hardware to receive some of the latest Android updates including Ice Cream Sandwich. This news is relevant to an article I wrote earlier about the Google Android Update Alliance with telecommunication companies starting to fizzle.

This Is An Intel Smartphone Prototype

In a world where Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC, and Motorola have been reigning supreme in the smartphone market, Intel is the latest challenger. In the past, Intel has sat on the sidelines only to provide the internal parts to these smartphone manufacturers. Above is a photo of a smartphone prototype that has been developed by Intel and runs on the Android operating system. This concept phone currently has the code-name “Medfield” and we may even see it at CES.

Google Activating 700,000 New Android Devices Per Day

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) SVP of Mobile Andy Rubin has announced that “there are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day.” They count each device only once and they do not count re-sold devices. An activation means that you go into a store, buy the device, and put it on the network. To put that number into further perspective, it means that about 5 million Android devices are being activated per week, 21 million per month, and about 250 million per year. [9to5Google]
