FoodSpotting App Hits 1 Million Downloads

FoodSpotting is a food social network mobile application that has surpassed in over 18 months after the service launched. FoodSpotting recently redesigned an iPhone and Android app. FoodSpotting is also working on a new BlackBerry and Windows Phone app. FoodSpotting co-founder and CEO Alexa Andrzejewski said that they had about 300,000 app users at about nine months after launch.

Google Shopper For iPhone Now Shows Offers Near-By

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has a major interest in competing directly with Groupon. After Groupon refused Google’s $6 billion offer, Google realized that they cannot just buy their way into the local deals market. Google now has a new feature in the Google Shopper app [iTunes link] where mobile users can find local deals.

Apple Creates Volume Purchasing Program for Businesses

Apple’s App Store is soon to host to a volume purchase program for businesses in addition to the company’s volume purchase program for educational institutions. According to MacRumors, businesses that enroll in the program will be allowed to buy apps in volume to use for as many or as few employees as the company requires.
WhitePages Frustrated with Apple, Launches Localicious in the Android Market

WhitePages has launched their new Localicious app in the Android Market instead of in the iPhone App Store because the company is dissatisfied with Apple’s slow app approval process. All Things D reports that iPhones are the target market for WhitePages, but that Chief Operating Officer Kevin Nakao has found that Apple holds apps “hostage” and doesn’t always allow apps the access they need. Currently, launching with Android instead of Apple means a company has better information and resources to plan the timing of a launch.
BeenVerified Now Offers Background Checks With Android and iPhone Apps

BeenVerified, the website that does background checks for users, now has apps for both Android and iPhone. The company previously offered an iPhone app in 2009, but it was taken out of Apple’s app store because of privacy concerns. Apple has now agreed to allow the re-release of the BeenVerified app. The app is free to download and offers one free background check a month.

Facebook’s Upcoming Photo App Looks Great

Social networking company Facebook.com is working on adjusting their iPhone application to make photos look more appealing. Facebook receives about 6 billion photo uploads per month and has about 100 billion photos total. A screenshot of the new Facebook app was sent to TechCrunch. The app is currently being tested internally with the name “Hovertown” or “WithPeople.” [TechCrunch]
Apple Changes In-App Subscription Rules

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has changed their guidelines for the pricing of their in-app subscriptions for the App Store. Now subscriptions no longer have to be the same price or less than what is offered outside of the app. There is no longer any guidelines about the prices at all.

Lodsys Files Patent Lawsuit Against Android Developers For In-App Purchases Too

Patent holding company Lodsys LLC has filed a lawsuit against independent Google Android developers. This is a follow-up to Lodsys’ lawsuit against several independent Apple developers. After learning about the lawsuit Lodsys filed against independent Apple App Store developers, Apple’s legal team personally stepped in and said that they have a license that protects the developers.

Analytics firm Distimo did some research on the Apple App Store and the Google Android Market. There are about 72,000 paid Android Market apps and 211,000 paid Apple App Store apps. Distimo also reported that Apple tends to have bigger application hits.
