How Much Does A $79 Shuffle Cost Apple To Make? About $22!

We all know how much the mark-up that Coca-Cola and Pepsi puts on their beverages. But what about iPods? How much are those marked up? In this scenario, we’ll focus on the new stick-shaped iPod Shuffle 3G.
The iPod Shuffle 3G costs Apple about $21.77 including the packaging. This makes the Shuffle Apple’s most profitable product. The $21.77 price they are charged is only about 28% of the $79 retail price. When the first iPod Touch was released, the MSRP was about $299 and the manufacturing cost was about 49% ($147).
Now that the iPhone is selling like hot cakes and Macs are selling by the hundreds of thousands, the company can sit back and focus on cost reduction. I will not be surprised if we start seeing Apple focus more on cutting costs and building advanced software over the next year rather than focusing just on introducing groundbreaking devices.

Nicholas Arthur Woodhams, 23, Charged With Scamming 9,075 iPod Shuffles
Nicholas Arthur Woodhams used a warranty scheme Apple out of 9,075 iPod Shuffle devices. Woodhams then began to sell the devices over the Internet for $49 each. The retail price for the Shuffle is about $79. The complaint filed against Woodhams was made in the U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids. Woodhams was charged with mail fraud and money laundering.
Woodhams ran an iPod repair business. He changed around his business several times to “iPod Mechanic,” “iMechanic,” and “Pod Tradeup.” Woodhams lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Woodhams guessed valid serial numbers of iPod Shuffles that were under warranty and had Apple send replacement products. specific digits that correspond with the model, color, and several other features.
Apple’s return policy requests the defective gadget back from the consumer. Woodhams got around this by setting up prepaid VISA gift cards and a UPS store mailbox. VISA would reject the charge requests made by Apple rather than having to send the company any defective units.

SNL Skit From 2005 Predicted New Shuffle Size
The Shuffle keeps getting smaller and smaller. SNL made a skit in 2005 that made fun of that fact starring Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler. Perhaps next we’ll see the Micro, the Picenyo and the Invisa join the Shuffle line. BTW, the first few seconds of the video is blurry, but it gets better.

Just When You Thought The iPod Shuffle Couldn’t Get Any Smaller

Just when you thought the iPod Shuffle couldn’t get any smaller, Apple went ahead and made the Shuffle smaller. The new, slim 4GB Shuffle is half the size of the last version. It’s smaller than a AA battery and holds 1,000 songs. There is also a VoiceOver feature that tells you the song title, artist, playlist names, etc. It also warns you when the battery is low. The battery life of the device is said to be around 10 hours.
The VoiceOver feature comes in 14 languages: English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, etc. This feature should not be confused with speech recognition. You cannot say the name of the track and have the iPod find it for you.
The new Shuffle is available now at about $79 in silver and black. It stands at 1.8″ tall and 0.3″ thick. The navigation and volume is built into the earphones. Apple will no longer be selling a 2GB $69 Shuffle that was launched last year, but will continue to sell an older $49 1GB Shuffle.
