AT&T is going to release a family data plan soon. AT&T Mobile CEO Ralph de la Vega said that the upcoming shared plan would allow consumers to buy one package of data to split amongst multiple devices. This could encourage additional tablet sales. “I’m very comfortable with the plan that will be offered to our customers,” stated de la Vega in an interview with CNET.

This data plan is contrary to what de la Vega believed in a few months ago. He doubted in family plans due to IT, billing, and device subsidization. Ralph de la Vega refused to give any additional details.

AT&T was one of the first companies to introduce new ways of splitting data plans. They released a tiered data plan and started to cap data usage. Who will introduce family data plans now? Verizon or AT&T?

How and when does Android phones get updated? When AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson was speaking at a conference in Los Angeles, he said that “Google determines what platform gets the newest releases and when. A lot of times, that’s a negotiated arrangement and that’s something we work at hard.” Google was clearly surprised by the answer AT&T gave because they make the latest Android updates available to anyone who wants it on their website.

The four major carriers in the U.S. have been tested for how fast they run. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile all have some kind of 4G technology whether it is LTE, WiMAX, or HSPA+. Each of these carriers claim that they have the fastest or most reliable, but who is being truthful. PCWorld conducted a test called “2012 Mobile Speed Test” and found that AT&T’s 4G LTE service is the fastest download speeds while Verizon’s 4G LTE network had the fastest upload speeds. The T-Mobile HSPA+ 21 network was the fastest 3G service. Sprint’s 3G ad WiMAX technology was behind all of their competition. The real-world speed tests were conducted in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington DC.

AT&T Fastest 4G Service, T-Mobile Fastest in 3G, PCWorld Mobile Speed Tests Reveal
Sprint lags badly behind in both 3G and 4G speeds, 13-city testing shows.

San Francisco, April 17, 2012—Mobile internet service is a major monthly expense for most American consumers, and a very big business for U.S. wireless companies. The marketing machines of those companies are now in high gear, touting their services as the industry transitions from 3G service to the much faster 4G. Problem is, everybody’s service is “4G”, “most reliable”, “biggest”, “fastest” and “best,” if you believe all the names and claims flying about on TV, radio, print media and the Web.

That’s why PCWorld has once again hit the road to measure the real-world performance of the four major wireless services on America’s streets and in its coffee shops. During February and March of this year, PCWorld measured the speeds of the major U.S. carriers’ 3G and 4G wireless services from 130 locations in 13 major U.S. cities.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE STUDY

AT&T had the fastest download speeds of any 4G service, along with an HSPA+ service that’s very competitive with 3G services–a compelling service combination for AT&T dual-mode phones.

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 21 service proved faster overall than comparable 3G services in our study, and the carrier’s high-end HSPA+ 42 service held its own with the 4G services of its larger competitors. Those services, and the array of flexible and affordable plans it offers, make T-Mobile a good choice for many wireless users.

Verizon has 4G service in many more locations than other providers, but in most localities the download speed of its 4G service doesn’t match AT&T’s (though its upload speeds are faster, more often than not). And Verizon’s 3G speeds have not improved much, especially when compared to the competition.

Sprint is a consistent laggard in the wireless speed races. The company appears to have virtually stopped developing its network while looking for a way to transition from its outdated WiMAX 4G technology to LTE.

“The big surprise in this year’s study is T-Mobile’s performance,” says PCWorld Senior Editor Mark Sullivan, who designed and managed the study. “By offering data speeds that are very competitive with AT&T and Verizon along with its affordable data plans, T-Mobile is proving why its proposed acquisition by AT&T last year would have been bad news for US consumers.”

“The other (rather sobering) surprise in this year’s data is Sprint’s poor performance, both in 3G and 4G service. The carrier’s speeds suggest that both the Sprint CDMA and WiMAX networks have seen very little investment and upgrade over the past year—in a mobile data market where the rule is ‘grow faster or parish.’”

While a majority of wireless consumers still use slower 3G devices today, most will transition to faster 4G devices over the next five years as carriers push them to upgrade to newer 4G devices when their contracts expire, Sullivan says. Meanwhile wireless companies will continue to increase their networks’ data transfer speeds to compete for new customers and retain old ones.

FASTEST 3G AND 4G SERVICES BY CITY:

Atlanta — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Boston — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Chicago — 3G: AT&T; 4G: AT&T
Dallas — 3G: AT&T; 4G: AT&T
Denver — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
Los Angeles — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Las Vegas — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
New Orleans — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
New York — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
San Jose — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
San Francisco — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Seattle — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
Washington DC — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T

“Our annual speed study is an important part of what we do at PCWorld,” explains VP, Editorial Director, Steve Fox. “Many consumers look to us for an unbiased, independent, empirical assessment of the wireless technology and services being offered in the U.S. today.”

“It’s exciting to see the data speed wars heating up as the wireless providers move from 3G to 4G technology in their networks and devices,” Fox says. “We only hope that the competition eventually translates into better performance and better value for consumers.”

Our testing cities:Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington DC

This past weekend, AT&T started unlocking iPhones for off-contract customers so that the device can be used with a SIM-card from overseas carriers or with T-Mobile in the U.S. AT&T is also quietly unlocking iPhones for U.S. service members under contract with the carrier.

According to federal law, carriers are required to suspend service without penalty for deployed military personnel upon military orders, but AT&T is not required to unlock the phones of deployed service members. The company started doing it on their own though including deployed soldiers, airmen, sailors, and Marines. If you are deployed and want to learn more about it, contact AT&T customer service to learn more about getting your iPhone unlocked.

The Nokia Lumia 900 smartphone has been hit with a bug as reported by people on Nokia, Phone Arena, and WPCentral forums. Windows Phone on the Nokia Lumia 900 loses data connections if the cellular link is restarted at any point. This problem also includes something as simple as airplane mode. You can fix the problem temporarily by booting up the phone without a SIM, shutting down, and then putting the SIM in again. It is believed that the unique phone identifiers (IMEIs) were not registering properly on the data network and AT&T is now taking the defective devices off the shelves.

The four major U.S. wireless carriers have made an agreement to work with the FCC for creating a central database to track and disable stolen mobile devices. The database will be designed for tracking phones that are reported as stolen and deny them the ability to access voice and data services.

Verizon and Sprint currently block phones that are reported as stolen and from being reactivated. AT&T and T-Mobile do not have this service available on-hand right now. All four companies have agreed to be a part of the new database. Electronics are now the most common stolen type of property with mobile phones accounting for over 80% of this kind of theft.

Each of the major carriers will build individual databases within the next 6 months and integrate them over the following 12 months. The smaller carriers will also join the database at that point.

“Subsidies by post-paid wireless operators have fueled the growth of Apple’s $600 iPhone since its inception,” stated Piecyk. “Wireless operators have been happy to subsidize smartphones to new and existing customers in order to provide a lift to the average monthly bill (ARPU) of their customer base, a metric which had been falling for the past three decades.”

The wireless companies are making it harder for people to receive a new iPhone every year at a cheaper rate. He believes that iPhone sales will drop to 27.5 million in the third quarter for revenue, which would bring in $1 billion less than the consensus on Wall Street.

The fact that the Nokia Lumia 900 was released on Easter, a day where most phone retail stores are closed seems to be poorly planned. The New York Times wrote that 39 AT&T stores within proximity of Times Square in Manhattan were either closed for Easter Sunday or did not have the phone in stock.

The automated message at the AT&T stores also had an automated message that said “Visit our store to see the exciting iPhone 4S and how only AT&T’s network lets your iPhone 4S download three times faster.”

In Times Square, Nokia sponsored an event featuring a performance by Nicki Minaj. In Times Square, Nokia had roped off an area for the concert and they had promotional messages on screens for the show. They served cocktails like the “Lumia Light” and “Beautifully Different.” There was only one table that had Lumia 900 phones on display, but it was ignored by many of the people there.

When a spokesperson was asked why they picked Easter, they did not have a specific answer. Instead AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said “The Lumia has received tremendous product reviews and we have been taking pre-orders online and in our stores all week. We are already off to the races.”

The good news for Nokia, Microsoft, and AT&T is that the Lumia 900 is doing pretty well in terms of online orders. It is ranked #5 as the best-selling cellphones with service plans on Amazon.com.

Nokia has launched a new website called “Smartphone Beta Test” to promote the AT&T Lumia 900, powered by Windows Phone. The website has a countdown clock that is set to expire on April 6th and there is a video of Chris Parnell sitting in a chair looking bored. Below that video are links to three other videos that features two people convincing another person that his iPhone is working normally despite losing reception for holding it wrong, the screen washing out in the sun, and for being fragile. The ad about the phone being fragile has a date stamp that says 2007 and towards the end of the video he talks about how mortgate-backed securities are a terrific investment too. The guy talking about them has “a friend at Lehman” too.
