Above is a photo of RIM’s official dev unit for the BlackBerry 10 platform. The dev unit is a 4.2-inch and 1280 x 768 display. The phone has 16GB internal storage and 1GB of RAM. New RIM CEO Thorsten Heins was the host of the event. People representing 150 countries were in the audience.

About 87% of BlackBerry users utilize social networking per day. There are 55 million BlackBerry Messenger subscribers and 77 million BlackBerry users around the world.

Heins said that the company has designers working on BlackBerry 10. “We want to make sure we get it right,” said Heins. The final hardware and software will be coming later this year.

Some of the features of BlackBerry 10 include:
- Easy sliding gestures to switch apps.
- Everything runs real-time in the background.
- The touch-keyboard uses predictive algorithms. You can swipe down to go to different keyboard layouts.
- Autocorrect words are displayed next to the key that you naturally have to type next. When you swipe across the keyboard, you will see the words disappear.

RIM also showed BlackBerry 10 connected to a car. “This car in itself is a connected ecosystem. It has screens in the back for video conferencing or gaming. It’s all run by BB10,” stated RIM head of software portfolio Vivek Bhardwaj.

On Orchard Lake Rd., one of the busiest roads connecting Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield, Michigan sits a stand-alone BlackBerry store. This store has been open for 5 years. “The store has two full-time employees and is stocked with accessories. For new customers, there is a BlackBerry training room in the back of the store with a whiteboard and a conference table. A television set in the corner, plugged into a PlayBook tablet, displayed a roaring fireplace,” wrote Will Connors of The Wall Street Journal. The BlackBerry retail store is run by Wireless Giant, who pitched RIM on the concept of opening up 100 retail stores. RIM was hit hard by ruthless competition and the global economy as a whole so they ended up just keeping this one retail store. Even though RIM is not as popular as Android and iOS in North America, they are still doing well abroad. This is why the next BlackBerry retail store will be opened up in Dubai and there are four operating in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Last week the 2012 BlackBerry Roadmap slide deck was leaked. The leaked Roadmap document included a photo of the BlackBerry 10 smartphone. The image of the slide above contains some details of BlackBerry “London” also known as BlackBerry 10.

This might not be the final design of BlackBerry 10 because another image of BlackBerry London leaked in November, but it doesn’t look like the image above. The first photo had angular edges and looked more like the Porsche Design P’9981 Smartphone by BlackBerry.

The BlackBerry London user interface above looks like a phone-version of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS. As you can tell, there are rounded corners and an all-black look. CrackBerry.com has it that BlackBerry 10 will run on TI OMAP5 and Qualcomm chipsets being tested on 1.5GHz dual core processors.

Research In Motion Limited (TSE:RIM) has turned down take-over offers in the past, but one of the most interesting was from Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). RIM knows that they have been having problems with maintaining a solid market share, but they prefer to get better as an independent. This past summer, Amazon.com hired an investment bank to review a potential merger with RIM. A formal offer was never made.

As of right now, RIM does is not interested in a joint venture or an outright sale, despite the interest. However RIM is still discussing ways to expand commercial ties with different companies, which include making Amazon.com’s music catalog available on BlackBerry devices.

RIM has a lot of work to do in order to survive. The company’s value dropped 77% in the past 12 months to about $6.8 billion as the company had kept reporting disappointing quarterly reports. Weak sales of the PlayBook have been cited as well. Some corporate and private equity companies are waiting for RIM’s value to drop even further before making a move too.

Another idea is for RIM to license out the QNX operating system in late 2010 after BlackBerry 10 launches. QNX could be an alternative for smartphone manufacturers to use instead of Android. But smartphone manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung already have licensing agreements with Google and currently do not see value in striking a partnership with RIM. This means that RIM would really have to provide a lot of incentives to smartphone manufacturing companies to even be considered a blip on Android and iOS’ radar.

Research In Motion Limited (TSE:RIM) has announced their third quarter earnings earlier today. RIM reported $265 million in earnings, which is 51 cents per share for the quarter. This is down 71% from $911 million during the same quarter a year ago. The reason for the drop is because of the $485 million hit RIM took due to unsold PlayBook tablets.

There is also a $54 million charge the company took when they had a worldwide outage this past fall. RIM’s overall revenue is down only 6% at $5.17 billion from $5.5 billion last year. About 14.1 million BlackBerry smartphones and about 150,000 PlayBooks were shipped in the quarter. RIM said that they plan on shipping about 11 and 12 million more smartphones in the next 3 months.

There has been a 3 day disruption of BlackBerry services that spread to North America today. This has caused frustration to millions of BlackBerry users. RIM has advised their clients about an outage happening in the Americas and they are currently trying to restore services in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and India.

According to RBC, about half of BlackBerry’s 70 million users could be affected by the disruptions. “The messaging and browsing delays … were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure,” said RIM in a company statement. “As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service.” The disruption has not been this bad since two years ago when a similar incident occurred.
