Bump Technologies Raises $16 Million

Bump Technologies is a mobile application company that lets users share information simply by bumping their phones together. Bump has raised $16 million in a second round of funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Sherpalo Ventures, and SV Angels. Marc Andreessen will be joining the board of directors at Bump as well.

Its not just contact information being shared on Bump anymore. Now you can share music and photos on Bump. About 20 photos are being shared every second through Bump. The application is currently being used by about 25 million people with about 1 million people that were added in the last 2 weeks itself. Bump launched out of the Y Combinator start-up incubator.

Share Music By Bumping iOS Devices Together

The Bump iOS application has released a new feature that lets you share music. Bump version 2.2 allows users to select songs from their iTunes library and share it with friends by bumping devices together. Users will be able to listen ot the full tracks on YouTube or preview and buy them on iTunes.

Bump co-founder and CEO David Lieb said “We think Bump is the simplest and easiest way to tell your friends about songs and artists you love.” Bump currently supports bumping features for social media contacts, calendar events, photos, PayPal transfers etc.

Bump Technologies Inc. is a company that has $4 million in VC funding from Sequoia Capital, Ram Shriram, Y-Combinator, and Ron Conway. Bump is getting close to about 10 million downloads for their free application. Bump’s application is free and it allows people to share their contacts with each other simply by bumping phones. You can become Facebook friends or share photos too. Bump also recently launched an API. [VentureBeat]

Bump Technologies Launches App For Android

Bump Technologies has taken their popular iPhone application in which users exchange contact information simply by bumping phones and ported it over to the Android operating system. As the application launches on the Android today, a new version was just approved on the Apple App Store too.

The updated version has a feature called “Friend Compare” which looks at the address book of both phones and both of your Facebook profiles to see if you have mutual friends. When bumping each other’s phones, you can also automatically update your Facebook profile too. The Android version won’t have the Facebook integration yet, but it can be expected in future versions.

Bump Technologies Gets Funding From Sequoia Capital

It seems that whenever a company gets featured by Apple, they will immediately get funding after. Bump Technologies is no exception. The company behind the Bump application has received funding from Sequoia Capital according to TechCrunch. Jason Kincaid discovered that Bump’s logo was on Sequoia’s PowerPoint presentation slides at the StartupSchool event.

The funding is rumored to be about $3 million based on a $10 million valuation. The Bump app is free on iTunes making the valuation sound pretty interesting. Bump allows people to transfer contact information simply by bumping two iPhones together. Bump launched out of Y-Combinator. Bump Technologies was founded by David Lieb, Andy Huibers, and Jake Mintz in October 2008.

In the frequently asked questions portion of Bump’s website, the founders revealed how the app works which I found pretty interesting. Below is that excerpt:

There are two parts to BumpTM: the app running on your device and a smart matching algorithm running on our servers in the cloud. The app on your phone uses the phone’s sensors to literally “feel” the bump, and it sends that info up to the cloud. The matching algorithm listens to the bumps from phones around the world and pairs up phones that felt the same bump. Then we just route the contact information between the two phones in each pair.
