BuzzFeed is one of my most favorite time-pass websites because they have interesting galleries and lists of pop culture. BuzzFeed has raised $15.5 million in Series C funding led by New Enterprise Associates. Other investors that participated include Lerer Ventures, Hearst Media, SoftBank, and RRE Capital. NEA General Partner Patrick Kerins will be joining the BuzzFeed board of directors. Ken Lerer, the Huffington Post co-founder and BuzzFeed board member, will become the BuzzFeed executive chairman.

Former Huffington Post President Greg Coleman is also joining the BuzzFeed board of directors. BuzzFeed was founded by co-founded by Jonah Peretti, who was the former CTO of The Huffington Post before the company was acquired by AOL.

BuzzFeed has recently hit some major milestones. For example, the company has tripled their traffic to 25 million monthly unique visitors in the past year. They hired Politico’s Ben Smith to serve as the head editor. And recently they broke the news about how John McCain was going to endorse Mitt Romney before CNN and other news agencies.

BuzzFeed is a New York-based website that has raised $8 million from RRE Ventures, Ron Conway, and Chris Dixon. BuzzFeed raised a $3.5 million Series A in 2008 from Hearst, Softbank, and Ken Lerer — who all participated in this round also. BuzzFeed founder Jonah Peretti was also one of the founding partners in The Huffington Post.

Essentially BuzzFeed tracks everything that is viral, whether it is videos or news stories. “We built a viral analytics platform that tracks how consumers interact with media in realtime and a viral advertising platform that sends more traffic to the content that is actually working. So we optimize content for viral distribution using realtime data and we make money through viral advertising on our site and network,” stated Peretti. BuzzFeed receives 3 million unique visitors per month. Currently BuzzFeed has roughly 12 employees, but they plan to scale up to 25.

BuzzFeed is like a combination of Techmeme and Digg. Stories that appear on the homepage of Buzzfeed has related links on the site. A lot of the content on BuzzFeed appears to be for adults. BuzzFeed also has a heavy focus on celebrities.

BuzzFeed raised $3.5 million in their first round of funding yesterday. Finding the stories for the homepage and the related links is human-driven and partially algorithm-driven. Jonah Peretti is one of the founders of BuzzFeed and he stated that BuzzFeed is in the information business. Peretti added that BuzzFeed can be used by advertisers to spot emerging trends.

BuzzFeed receives about 1 million monthly visitors. The company was founded in October 2006. After Google acquired Feedburner last year, Eric Olson left to join BuzzFeed.
