Call of Duty: Black Ops Breaks Sales Record With $360 Million In One Day

Activision has announced that they have a new “biggest entertainment launch in history” record through the sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Activision estimates that they made $360 million on the opening day of the game sales in the U.K. and North America. About 5.6 million copies of the game were sold on the first day.

Call of Duty: Black Ops succeeds Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which had the previous “biggest entertainment launch in history.” That game brought in $310 million on launch day and sold 4.7 million copies.

“There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $550 million,” stated Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.

40 Current and Former Infinity Ward Developers Suing Activision For $500 Million

About 40 past and current Infinity Ward developers are suing the company because of breach of contract and unpaid royalties for the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The class action lawsuit seeks $500 million from Activision’s Infinity Ward over unpaid bonuses, profit sharing, punitive damages and future profits from future games including Modern Warfare 3. The payments were withheld to prevent employees from leaving Activision.

“In short, Activision withheld the property of the IWEG in an attempt to keep the employees hostage so that Activision could reap the benefit of the completion of Modern Warfare 3, ” stated a document filed for the lawsuit. Jason West and Vince Zampella are two of the people behind the lawsuit. The two filed a lawsuit against Activision and is seeking $36 million in unpaid royalties. West and Zampella started a gaming studio of their own called Respawn Entertainment and even signed a deal with Electronic Arts already. [Kotaku]

Vince Zampella and Jason West are two of the most important names in the gaming industry. Both of them were ousted from Activision, the company that developed Call of Duty.

Zampella and Jason West are the creators of Modern Warfare and decided to start a new gaming studio company called Respawn Entertainment. Respawn already has a partnership with Electronic Arts now too.

There has been a legal battle over the last month between Activision and Zampella/West. Both Zampella and West sued Activision over unpaid royalties for Modern Warfare 2 and Activision decided to sue them back. Activision accused the men of scheming to “hijack Activision’s assets for their own personal gain.”

Kotaku reached out to Activision to find out their opinion on Respawn’s partnership with EA. Activision responded by saying:
“This agreement comes as no surprise to Activision given the myriad of improper activities detailed in the cross-complaint filed on Friday against Jason West and Vince Zampella. We look forward to continuing to work with Infinity Ward’s deep bench of proven talent on exciting new projects.” [Kotaku]

Modern Warfare 2 Gamers Log About 1.75 Billion Hours On Xbox Live

Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward sent out a tweet saying that Modern Warfare 2 gamers have logged in about 1.75 billion hours into the game on Xbox Live itself. When dividing this many hours into years, it comes out to be around 200,000 years. [Kotaku]

Modern Warfare 2 Makes $600 Million In 5 Days; Modifies For Russians

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the top selling game by selling 9.4 million copies in five days and bringing in $600 million in revenue. This is even higher than Grand Theft Auto IV. The game was so popular that Xbox LIVE hit 2 million simultaneous players at once shortly after the game was released.

However the game was banned in Russia because of a controversial scene in which the main character kills civilians in a Russian airport. The mission is called “No Russian.” Activision agreed to remove this mission in copies that they ship to Russia.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a new game that was developed by Infinity Ward and was published by Activision. Even before the trailer was released, there was a lot of hype about the release. All the hype paid off because the game earned $310 million in the first 24 hours that it was released. That dollar amount is just paid on sales in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The company sold 4.7 million copies of the game in 24 hours. This game beat the record of Grand Theft Auto: IV which sold 3.6 million copies on the first day. The game setting is based on a military conflict between Russia and the United States.

In the single player mode, the game player assumes the role of U.S. Army Ranger Private Joseph Allen and he helps Afghan city that has been taken over by militants. Allen ends up being killed by a Russian militant and is scapegoated for a massacre of civilians in Russia. Russia views this as a terrorist attack and attempts to invade the United States. This game is guaranteed to be an action-packed thrill ride. At least that’s what it looks like in the trailer.
