Cloudera has raised $25 million in a third round of funding. The funding was led by Meritech Capital Partners. Other investors include Accel Partners and Greylock Partners. The company has raised a total of $36 million.

Cloudera was founded by former engineers at Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, and a former Oracle executive. Cloudera is the commercial source for a Apache Hadoop, which is software that helps analyze data that is generated.

“Companies are collecting data at a rate that’s really faster than they can process and analyze–and do that cost effectively,” stated Cloudera VP of marketing John Kreisa in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. This has led to “tremendous growth in interest in this technology and therefore in the services and software that Cloudera provides.”

Cloudera makes money by offering training classes and professional services to get Apache Hadoop up and running for companies. Cloudera was started in October 2008 and they have about paying 50 customers. Their customers include eBay and Bank of America.

Doug Cutting, co-creator of the Hadoop technology that powers Yahoo!’s search index is leaving to join Cloudera. Cutting will be joining Cloudera at the end of August. Cutting is heading out shortly after Microsoft made a deal with Yahoo! to power their search engine and share in ad revenues. However Cutting claims that his resignation does not have to do with the deal.

“This has been in the works for awhile and is unrelated,” stated Cutting. “I am definitely not leaving in any sort of protest, and the thing I like least about this move is that it might be perceived that way.”

Cutting will be doing a similar job at Cloudera. He will continue working with Yahoo! developers at Cloudera. Hadoop is open source software made for data mining.
