Textbook Service Chegg Acquires Tutor Service Student of Fortune

Online textbook rental service Chegg announced today that it has acquired Student of Fortune, a site where students tutor each other. Chegg also recently acquired Cramster, Notehall and CourseRank. With each acquisition the company becomes more than a textbook service, as their newly-revamped website now features a “homework help” section and courses section that offers schedules, reviews and grades distributions. Chegg also now offers an HTML5-based e-reader for textbooks. [Mashable]

Cramster.com Gets Acquired By Chegg

Cramster.com, an online homework help website created by Aaron Hawkey, Robert Angarita, and Kaveh Golabi, has been acquired by Chegg.com. The transaction details were undisclosed. Chegg said that this acquisition will add to their textbook rental and course planning services. Cramster had raised $9 million in funding from Primera Capital and Shai Reshef. Cramster has about 1 million users.

Cramster Raises $6 Million In Series B

Cramster.com is a website where high school and college students have announced that they have raised $6 million in Series B, led by Primera Capital. Primera Capital Managing Partner Ori Sasson joined the board of directors at Cramster.com as a result.

“We believe the market for online study tools is poised for explosive growth,” stated Sasson. “Cramster’s team, product offering, and growing and passionate community clearly make it the leader in the space. We are very excited about the possibilities and potential.”

Cramster has about 200,000 active users but has plans to triple their user base in the next 12 months. Cramster was founded in 2003. Cramster’s users include professors, TAs, students, etc.

Cramster is social network to make study buddies. The first step is to identify whether you are a high school student, college student, parent, educator, or subject enthusiast. Depending on that selection, Cramster will give you a tour of how to utilize the social network for your own needs.

This past week, Cramster has raised $3 million in Series A. The funding was led by Shai Reshef [TechCrunch]. Reshef was appointed Chairman of the company too. Prior to Cramster, Reshef started a company called The Kidum Group, a company that was acquired by Kaplan.

Cramster will be using the funding to expand upon operations and marketing.
