Online Eyeglasses Seller Vitaly Borker Pleads Guilty For Threatening Customers
Vitaly Borker operates a website called DecorMyEyes.com. The New York Times reported how Vitaly used negative publicity to increase his PageRank on Google. He would often threaten customers with physical and sexual assault. Out of anger, his customers would write negative reviews about him on forums. The increased incoming links would put DecorMyEyes.com at the top of Google for certain search results, thus converting more sales for Borker.

Vitaly Borker boasted about how his website was at the top of Google for certain search keywords. His business, DecorMyEyes.com, used negative publicity to get attention for his business. He threatened customers with sexual assault and physical assault so that they would complain about him on consumer review forums and websites. These incoming links powered his website to move him up on Google.com and increased his chances of selling products.

Google To Penalize PageRank Of Bad Businesses
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) plans to penalize businesses with bad practices. Google took action on their ranking system after a story appeared on The New York Times about how the owner of DecorMyEyes, an eyeglasses store, cursed and threatened at their customers. The negative reviews for DecorMyEyes on different consumer websites linking to his website bumped him up the search engine rankings. The result of being at the top of Google for certain keywords caused the sales at DecorMyEyes.com to substantially increase. Google has knocked them back down and has modified their algorithm to penalize bad businesses. “I am here to tell you that being bad is, and hopefully will always be, bad for business in Google’s search results,” stated Google Fellow Amit Singhal in a blog post.
