DeepMind’s Health Business Is Moving Over To Google

According to CNBC, the health division of Alphabet’s AI research group known as DeepMind will be moving over to Google’s new Health unit — which is being headed up by former Geisinger CEO Dr. David Feinberg. Alphabet is Google’s parent company. And DeepMind’s health team is known for creating an app that helps doctors identify potentially life-threatening problems called Streams.

DeepMind said that one of the reasons for joining forces with Google in 2014 was the opportunity to use the search giant’s scale and experience in building billion-user products to bring its breakthroughs more rapidly to the world. “Over the past three years we’ve built a team of experts in what it takes to deploy clinical tools in practice – engineers, clinicians, translational researchers and more. In that time, we’ve also made major advances in healthcare AI research: detecting eye disease more quickly and accurately than experts; planning cancer radiotherapy treatment in seconds rather than hours; and working to detect patient deterioration from electronic records,” said DeepMind in a blog post.

DeepMind’s vision for Streams is now to become an AI-powered assistant for nurses and doctors by combining advanced algorithms with an intuitive design. The Streams team is going to reamin in London under the leadership of former NHS surgeon and researcher Dr. Dominic King.

This change is also part of a broader strategy for Alphabet to increase the collaboration and communication for all of its health projects. DeepMind Health is no longer going to continue as an independent brand as it becomes a product within Google.
