Dell has announced that they will be acquiring Wyse Technology. The terms of the deal were undisclosed, but Dell expects Wyse to be added to their fiscal 2013 earnings. Wyse will be integrated into Dell’s subsidiary of enterprise companies. Wyse is best known for making thin clients, but they have expanded into desktop virtualization software and hardware. The acquisition of Wyse will make Dell more competitive against companies like Citrix and VMware. Wyse has shipped over 20 million units and they have a pretty broad intellectual property portfolio. Dell will also start selling thin clients, cloud management software, and mobility tools to their product-line. Wyse has about $375 million in revenues trailing for the last 12 months and 500 employees. About 140 of those employees are software engineers that will work for Dell.

Dell is ending the sales of smartphones in the U.S. The company is planning to focus more on emerging markets and higher-margin products to improve their financials. This means that customers will no longer be able to buy the Venue and Venue Pro smartphones anymore. No replacements have been announced.

Dell does plan on launching more mobile products later this year, but a Dell spokesperson did not say whether a smartphone would be among those products. Dell originally entered the market in August 2010 with the Aero and Streak 5. The Venue smartphones had Google Android and Microsoft Windows Phone 7 operating on them.

Dell will continue to sell smartphones outside of the U.S. like the Venue Pro in India, the Venue in South Korea, and the Streak in Japan. Dell is also going to discontinue netbooks to focus on higher-margin consumer products.

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) will no longer be selling the Streak 7 tablet device. The device is no longer available online. It has only been a few months since Dell phased out the Streak 5 as well.

“Dell remains committed to the mobility market and continues to sell products here and in other parts of the world,” said Dell in a statement. “Streak 7 delivered a unique experience for customers who wanted a larger screen-size yet the freedom of staying connected to their personal and professional content while on the-go. It continues to be available in many markets through retail, distributors and carrier partners such as Optus in Australia. A 10-inch version of the tablet, Streak 10 Pro, is currently offered in China, offering the ultimate digital divide between work and life. ”

Dell has not been successful when it came to selling tablets and part of the reason for that is by announcing devices well in a good amount of time before they made it available on the market. For example, they showed a prototype of the Streak 5 several weeks before the iPad the iPad was announced. Dell did not end up shipping the device until August 2010. The hardware and software was unchanged from what they showed.

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) is best known for building customized PCs for their customers. However this past weekend a Reddit user noticed on the Dell website that there was a faulty suggestion for what the purpose of graphics cards are.

After clicking the “Help me choose” link on the Dell website when configuring a compact OptiPlex PC, the above image appeared. Both monitors appear to be part of the same model, but the one on the left is powered by a cheaper “standard graphics card.” That cheaper graphics card was not keeping the desktop screen in focus. The one on the right was sharper.

People tend to opt-in for more expensive graphics cards if they like playing games with sharper images. Standard graphic cards are still good enough to see the desktop and does not make your computer look like that image on the left at all.

Dell removed the image and ended up apologizing for it:

“Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Dell endeavours to help customers to make the best decisions regarding their purchases. It was never our intention to mislead customers, and we apologise for any confusion caused. We have now removed the image from our Global sites. Dell remains committed to delivering the best possible experience to all our customers.”
