RUMOR: AOL Exploring Sale Of Engadget and TechCrunch

AOL is exploring the sale of technology websites Engadget and TechCrunch according to Sarah Lacy of PandoDaily.com. They are also considering selling off TUAW and Joystiq as a package along with those other two websites. The price they are seeking is around $70 to $100 million for all of the properties.

AOL’s Engadget Loses Staff to a Former Editor’s New Site

Josh Topolsky, former editor of AOL’s Engadget, is hiring away Engadget’s journalists to form his own tech news site. In the month after he left the company, Topolsky hired eight former Engadget staffers. AllThingsD reports that he has now also hired Engadget senior editor Thomas Ricker, senior associate editor Sean Hollister and associate editor Joseph Flatley.

Engadget Editor-In-Chief Josh Topolsky and Managing Editor Nilay Patel Leave AOL


Joshua Topolsky, the editor-in-chief, and Nilay Patel, Managing Editor, have stepped down from AOL and will no longer write for Engadget.com. After leaving AOL, Patel and Topolsky will be back in the tech news scene in some form. “I’m not leaving the industry or the news game–in fact, I’ve got a few fantasy projects in mind that hopefully you’ll be hearing about soon,” said Topolsky.

Two Engadget Editors Ross Miller and Paul Miller Quit Within A Week


Recently BusinessInsider.com leaked an AOL document that stated the company wants pageviews per story to go from 1,500 to 7,000. They also want to see stories optimized from search engines to reach 95%. Engadget editors Ross Miller and Paul Miller both did not like the rules AOL was enforcing so they stepped down. However Engadget editor-in-chief Joshua Topolsky insists that the gadget blog “is not subject to the AOL Way at all. I can’t be any more direct — it’s not happening here.” [The Next Web]

Engadget Editor Darren Murph Receives Guinness Record For Most Blog Posts Ever Written


Darren Murph, an editor for gadget blog Engadget.com has snagged a Guinness World Records award for the most posts ever written by a blogger. This is the first award of this category given away by Guinness. Darren joined Engadget in July 2006 and he wrote 17,212 blog posts in about 4 years. These include single posts written on Engadget, Engadget HD, and Engadget Mobile. He also wrote 59 posts in one day during CES 2008. At the time he received his award, he had also written about 3,389,148 words. That is impressive! Just as a comparison, I have written over 7,100 single posts since starting Pulse2 in September 2006. Former Engadget Editors Ryan Block and Peter Rojas Starting Up Gdgt.com


Engadget was co-founded by former Gizmodo editor, Peter Rojas. Ryan Block, Engadget’s former editor-in-chief stepped down on July 22, 2008 and left Engadget to be run by Joshua Topolsky.

Gdgt.com is a new and upcoming consumer electronics website that is started by Peter Rojas and Ryan Block. Gdgt.com is still under construction, but there is a weekly podcast available on the site.

Gdgt is not going to be a gadget blog according to Alley Insider. Insider believes that Gdgt will possibly be a social network since the site is soliciting users to create user names.
