Evernote has released an update for Mac and now they are at version 3.1. Evernote for Mac now has a bunch of new features including a redesigned screen, stability improvements, new Card View, word and character counts for notes, easier attachment export, etc.

The New Card View
The New Card View replaces the thumbnail view with a completely new Card View. The design of this new Card View is similar to Evernote for the iPad.

The Card View action bar
The Card View action bar uses a sorting method on the left, two card sizes in the middle, and the ability to hide and expand the note on the right.

Word and character count
The Word and character count has been one of the most demanded features. To view the counts, tap on “i” in the top right corner of a note. The numbers are displayed in the Size section. To view the counts quickly, try the CMD+Shift+I keyboard shortcut.

Redesigned account info
Evernote redesigned the account info screen inside the app to make it easier to find your remaining monthly allowance (60MB for free users and 1GB for premium). Free users can easily upgrade to premium by clicking the upgrade button in the account info screen.

Save all attachments
Drag something out of a note onto your desktop is simple, but exporting all the files and attachments in a note is challenging. Evernote added this ability in the Mac update. Now you can export all the files and attachments in a note. You can click on a note or select multiple notes and then right-click and choose “Save Attachments.”

Penultimate will be developed for a wider range of platforms and devices as a result of the acquisition. Evernote will use the technology from the app to integrate handwriting recognition into Evernote itself.

Evernote already has the ability to recognize handwritten text in scanned documents and they license this technology to third-parties, but Penultimate will create a possibility of allowing you to write with your finger or style directly into an updated Evernote app.

The acquisition terms were undisclosed. Cocoa Box founder Ben Zotto will join Evernote. It is uncertain whether Penultimate will continue as a stand-alone app. Evernote is getting close to the 30 million user mark.
Evernote has raised a $70 million Series D round of funding at a $1 billion valuation. Meritech Capital and CBC Capital lead the round because these companies could eventually help the company go public. Evernote did not even need this round of funding because a lot of the $96 million that they have raised from the previous round is still left over in their bank account, plus they have one million paying customers out of their 25 million users.

Evernote will use the Series D round of funding for international expansion including pushing into China. They also plan to use the funding for acquisitions, business account development, and hiring additional talent.

“This funding keeps is us in the sweet spot to take risks. This is the most creative stage for the company,” stated Evernote CEO Phil Libin in an interview with TechCrunch. Other investors that participated in this round include T. Rowe Price, Harbor Pacific Capital, Allen & Company, and several others.

Evernote has several products on the desktop and on mobile devices to help you remember things. Some of their products include Skitch, Web Clipper, Evernote Hello, Evernote Food, Evernote Clearly, and Evernote Peek.

Libin said that this round is not about Evernote becoming worth $1 billion today. ”I agree with our very wise investors. I think that Evernote as a publicly traded company could be worth $10 billion, $100 billion or more,” said Libin.

Evernote has acquired collaborative image editing company Skitch. Evernote CEO Phil Libin said that this is the first in a series of acquisitions over the next few months.

Skitch is an application that allows you to share and annotate photos. It will be available in the Mac app store and it will have a new Android version. An iPad and an iPhone version is also being planned. Libin said that Skitch is “the most natural way you work on something back and forth with a teammate.”

Skitch is often times used for taking screenshots, adding circles, captions, and sharing. Evernote and Skitch will be more tightly integrated in the future. Evernote made the announcement at their first annual Trunk Conference in San Francisco.

Evernote has launched a 2.0 version of their service for the Android platform. Evernote is a service that lets you capture ideas and experiences whenever you are on-the-go. This includes snapshots, text, whiteboards, wine labels, website clips, etc.

Evernote 2.0 for Android has a new home screen with big icons to create new notes, take a snapshot, tag notes, search, and set up notebooks.

At the top of every screen is a Search button that lets you create new searches, view previous searches, and access saved searches for things that are near you. When you want to look at different notes, you can use the swipe interface.

One of Evernote’s most requested features for Premium users is offline notebooks. If you have a premium account, you will have the ability to specify notebooks that you want stored for offline viewing in the Settings Screen. Evernote will download all of the specified notebooks and its attached files, then save them on the SD card.

Check out the video demo below for a demo:
Evernote is a storage service where users can clip notes from the web, take snapshots, record audio, and search on the computer for that saved information. Information that is taken can be stored on Evernote’s cloud servers. Evernote has software available for the PC, Mac, iPhone, Windows Mobile, the Web, and now they have a BlackBerry application available.

To use the software, BlackBerry users can navigate around the interface using the track ball. At the bottom of the application is a search box that allows you to find notes by tags. The Menu button allows you to view recently created notes, pending notes that are uploading, and the ability to activate the GPS. Playing back voice notes requires opening the BlackBerry media player.

The application is free, but subscriptions costs $5 per month for 40MB. The application works with the Bold, Storm, and the Curve 8900. It is currently only available through BlackBerry App World. Evernote raised $4.5 million this past January.
