Germany Calls Facebook’s Facial Recognition Illegal

German government officials have declared Facebook’s facial recognition technology illegal under German and EU data protection laws. The Atlantic Wire reports that data protection official Johannes Caspar said that with the facial recognition running, “the right to anonymity is in danger.” Germany has previously threatened legal action against Facebook for other privacy issues with events pages and the Friend Finder feature.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Sister Resigns from Facebook

Randi Zuckerberg is leaving her position as Facebook’s director of marketing. She is the sister of co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and has been with the company for six years. Zuckerberg says she is leaving Facebook to start her own company, a social media firm called RtoZ Media. AllThingsD reports that Facebook has confirmed her departure, but that her brother has made no comment on the matter.

The Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel in Ibiza now has pillars that read RFID bracelets that connect to the Facebook profiles of individuals. Guests can check in to the hotel, take pictures, update status messages, etc. to “make all your Facebook friends jealous.” [Mashable]

Facebook Acquires Push Pop Press

Facebook has acquired digital publishing innovators Push Pop Press. The company founders Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris explain, “Last year Push Pop Press set off to re-imagine the book. […] Now we’re taking our publishing technology and everything we’ve learned and are setting off to help design the world’s largest book, Facebook.” Push Pop Press previously published Al Gore’s Our Choice.

Missouri Teachers and Students Legally Won’t Be Allowed To Be Facebook Friends


If you are a teacher in Missouri and are Facebook friends with any of your students, then you may have to legally remove them soon. Missouri Senate Bill 54 is going into effect on August 28th and it prevents any social networking interaction (including Twitter) to be banned between students and teachers. This is part of an effort to “more clearly define teacher-student boundaries.” Senate Bill 54 is designed to protect children from misconduct by teachers. [Mashable/KSPR]

Facebook Plans to Pay Hackers to Expose Code Vulnerabilities

Facebook is now offering $500 (or more!) to hackers who can find flaws in the site’s security. The bigger the flaw, the larger the payout. TheNextWeb reports that hackers must sign up at their whitehat hacking portal to be eligible for the compensation.

As a refresher, Paul Ceglia is a man in New York that is claiming to own at least 50% of Facebook. Ceglia claims that he hired Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for some freelance work several years ago through a Craigslist post.

Facebook Is Building A Second Data Center In Oregon

Facebook is building another major data center at their campus in Prineville, Oregon. Facebook will begin the construction in October. The facility will resemble the 300,000 square foot data center. The announcement was made by Facebook Data Center Manager Ken Patchett at the Prineville City Council meeting earlier this week.

Ford Uses Social Media To Poll Fans About What EV Sounds To Use


Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is using an unfocused group to pick an artificially generated sound for their upcoming Focus electric vehicle. Ford posted four sounds on their Facebook social media Page to find out which one is the best. This past January, a law was enacted that required quiet hybrid vehicles to have some sort of artificial noise generator. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not clarified what kind of sound the hybrid vehicles should make yet. Below are the four sounds:

Facebook Files Huge Trademark Infringement Suit Against Typosquatters

Facebook is suing a number of entities in a trademark infringement case that addresses owners of sites that are typos of Facebook’s domain. As Bill Hartzer and Elliot’s Blog report, Facebook is suing “typosquatters” like Cyber2Media, FB Promotions/Freebie Promos, YourTick and more (25 named defendants in total) who have registered typos of Facebook’s domain. The social network filed the suit with a request to get the entities to either be relieved of their rights to the typo domains or to transfer those domains into Facebook’s property, as well as compensation for damages.
