Fring Announces FringOut To Take On Skype

VoIP service Fring has announced FringOut, a new service that allows you to make cheap phone calls to landlines and mobile phones. FringOut is starting out on the Nokia S60 and then will arrive on Android and the iPhone soon too. FringOut is promising calls for one cent per minute. Skype and Fring Are In A Legal Debate


On July 9, Fring released an update to their iPhone application where Skype was supported over 3G and WiFi. This was huge for iPhone 4 users since FaceTime video calling built in to the phone is only available via WiFi. Fring had to remove the Skype connection to free up server capacity. But it looks like Fring won’t be having to worry about adding Skype back to their service any time soon. Skype blocked Fring and also threatened legal action against them. Fring responded by calling Skype “cowards” in a blog post:

Fring App Suspends Access To Skype In Order To Free Up Capacity

Earlier this week I wrote about how the Fring iPhone app lets you make video calls over 3G. This would allow you to connect a phone to a computer with Skype. Due to overwhelming popularity, Fring had to temporarily suspend access to Skype in order to “free up capacity” for better Fring-to-Fring video calls. [Erictric]

The updated Fring iPhone application [iTunes link] supports videochat over 3G. It lets you call from phone to phone or phone to computer with Skype. However you may experience a little bit of lag when doing video calls. The reason why Fring iPhone app will grow in popularity is because the FaceTime feature on the iPhone 4 is supported by WiFi only as of right now. [Gizmodo]
