Gartner, Inc. (NYSE:IT) has reported that about 428 million mobile communication devices have sold across the world in Q1 2011, which is a 19% increase year-on-year.

According to Garnet, smartphone sales are up 98% year-over-year. Over 80 million of the 400 million phones sold were “smart” in the third quarter. And of those 80 million phones about 25.5% are Android-powered.

Gartner announced on Monday that they are buying AMR Research for $64 million. Gartner is an IT and supply chain company. The deal will be completed later this month. AMR is also a supply chain company that has about 85 employees and is expected to make $40 million in revenues this year. AMR will continue to operate indepedently.

AMR Chief Research Officer Bruce Richardson said that customers will not see any changes even though Gartner is a bigger company. “Your research, client services, and sales contacts will remain the same. All are being retained by Gartner,” stated Richardson.
