Chris Messina Wants Hashtags for Google+

Chris Messina, the man responsible for Twitter hashtags, wants to bring the topic-tagging method to Google+. Google already uses “+name” to tag people on Google+, but has yet to introduce any kind of tagging to the social network, which can make sifting through posts a little unorganized. As CNET notes, Google uses tags (“labels”) in Gmail.

William Shatner Kicked Out of Google+

Wiliam Shatner’s Google+ account was flagged for “violating standards.” TechCrunch reports that while Google has yet to comment on the actor’s ban, Shatner himself tweeted about it. “My Google+ account was flagged for violating standards. Saying hello to everyone apparently is against the rules maybe I should say goodbye?”

Google Source Codes Indicates a Google Games Service Coming Soon

TechCrunch reports that Yvo Schaap has found, buried in the Google+ source code, a link for a Google Games logo and API endpoints that indicate that Google Games will be a social gaming service. Schaap found references to “game friends” and an ability within Games to “post to stream.” Google is known to have invested more than $100 million in gaming giant Zynga in 2010, and also acquired gaming company Slide last year as well.

Social Networks by the Numbers: Twitter Turns 5, Newborn Google+ and a Maturing Facebook

Twitter is 5 years old today, sparking rounds of nostalgia and statistics. According to TheNextWeb, Twitter saw more than 600,000 new users in yesterday alone. When Twitter first started, it took more than 16 months to reach the 600,000 user mark. Meanwhile, the weeks-old Google+ demonstrates the other side of the spectrum of social network growth: in just a few weeks, it has gained more than 10 million users. Larry Page announced this stat yesterday from his own Google+ account.

GigaOM went through his hundreds of answers and found a lot of information about the future of Google+. What’s next for Google+ users? Updates to the stream and notifications. Author Neil Gaiman Leaves Google+, Will Others Soon Follow?

Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself) tweeted today, “Just deleted my Google+ profile. It felt good. Less noise in my life.“ For a man who frequently responds when fans @reply him, this is a significant statement—he is not one to shy away from sharing with fans via the internet. Is it just Google+ that’s too much noise, or was adding one more social network to his life the problem?
