Thunder Storm Temporarily Takes Down Amazon EC2, Netflix, Instagram, and Pinterest

Last night at 11:21PM EST, Amazon’s EC2 in North Virginia went down because of a thunder storm in the area.  The thunder storm caused massive power outages in the D.C. area.  Many popular websites run on Amazon EC2 including Netflix, Instagram, Heroku, and Pinterest.  Amazon was unable to fully restore EC2 in the area until at least 1:15AM.  Netflix was restored at 1:15AM and Pinterest was back up at 1:50AM.  Instagram is still having issues as of right now.

Salesforce.com Acquires Heroku For $212 Million In Cash


Salesforce.com, Inc. (NYSE:CRM) is acquiring Ruby platform-as-a-service company Heroku for $212 million in cash. Heroku was founded in 2007 and raised a total of $13 million in funding. Heroku received seed funding from Y Combinator in 2008.

Ruby On Rails Platform Company Heroku Raises $10 Million


Heroku is a Ruby on Rails platform built on Amazon.com’s EC2 infrastructure. The company has raised $10 million in a second round of funding, bringing them to a total of $15 million. The number of apps using Heroku has risen from 40,000 to 60,000 within the last 6 months. Ignition Partners led the fund. Other investors include Redpoint Venture Partners, Baseline Ventures, and Harrison Metal Capital. [GigaOm]
