Google Android Hits 500 Million Activations

Google has announced today that Android has reached 500 million activations.  There are 1.3 million new Android devices being activated per day as well.  This announcement was made by Android director of product management Hugo Barra.  Google announced at the Google I/O developer conference this past June that there were 400 million Android devices that were activated with 1 million being activated per day.  About 20% of Android phones are using Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.  There is a chance that Android could hit 1 billion activations by the end of the year.

 

Android Hits 400 Million Device Activations

At the I/O conference today, Google announced that Android has hit 400 million device activations.  This is up from 100 million that the company announced last year around the same time.  This means that 12 new Android devices are being activated per second state Android product management director Hugo Barra.  Apple sold 365 million devices, which means that Android has a larger market share.  Barra mentioned that Android’s growth in developing countries like Brazil and India has been rapid.

Google: Android “Not Optimized For Use On Tablets”


Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) director of products for mobile at Hugo Barra said that Android (Froyo) is not “optimized for use on tablets.” Google is currently not using Android on any tablets, but the Gingerbread and Honeycomb version of the operating system is hinted to be of use for tablets. The Galaxy Tab device will be running on Android and it seems like that this may contradict the statement, but the Tab can be considered an oversized phone rather than a tablet.
