Hailo Raises $30.6 Million In Series B

Hailo is a service that lets you summon a black cab in London, Boston, Chicago, Dublin, and Toronto.  The company has raised $30.6 million in Series B funding led by Union Square Ventures with participation from Japanese telecommunications company KDDI, Richard Branson (founder/chairman of Virgin Group), Phenomen Ventures, Felicis Ventures, Red Swan Ventures, Wellington Partners, and Atomico Ventures. Hailo has raised a total of about $50 million thus far.

KDDI and Sumitomo Make A Joint Bid For Jupiter Telecommunications

Japanese companies KDDI Corporation and Sumitomo have made a joint bid of $2.7 billion to acquire Jupiter Telecommunications.  KDDI and Sumitomo own around 70% of Jupiter, which is the largest cable operator in Japan.  They will offer Jupiter shareholders 110,000 yen ($1,378) for each of their shares.  This is 33% above Jupiter’s share price as of Friday when the deal was initially reported.

Damage From Earthquake Slams Mobile Communications In Japan


The 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in Japan costed the lives of hundreds of people and had disrupted communications in the Asian country. People are lining up at public phones which takes the priority of networks during and after the earthquake. Cell phones still work, but the service gets jammed quickly. Data works much better than voice on mobile networks. The three largest mobile phone networks said that their services were disrupted across Japan. The three largest mobile phone network companies include NTT DoCoMo, KDDI Corp., and Softbank Corp.
