AOL Acquires Photo-Sharing App Hipster

AOL has acquired Hipster and their five-person team will be working at the company’s mobile team in Palo Alto, California. They will be reporting to Sol Lipman. Hipster CEO Doug Ludlow will be the director of mobile product management. Hipster will not be shut down.

Viral Tracking Pop Culture Website BuzzFeed Raises $15.5 Million

BuzzFeed is one of my most favorite time-pass websites because they have interesting galleries and lists of pop culture. BuzzFeed has raised $15.5 million in Series C funding led by New Enterprise Associates. Other investors that participated include Lerer Ventures, Hearst Media, SoftBank, and RRE Capital. NEA General Partner Patrick Kerins will be joining the BuzzFeed board of directors. Ken Lerer, the Huffington Post co-founder and BuzzFeed board member, will become the BuzzFeed executive chairman.

Eytan Elbaz’s Secretive Scopely Raises A Secret (but probably large) Amount of Funding

Scopely, a startup founded by Google AdSense cofounder Eytan Elbaz, has raised funding from Greycroft Partners, Howard Lindzon, Lerer Ventures, Windsor Media, Dave Tisch, David Cohen, Evan Rifkin and Gil Elbaz. According to TechCrunch, the exact nature of Scopely and the amount of funding raised are currently being kept secret.

Canvas Raises $3 Million In Series A Funding

Canvas is a company that was founded by 4chan founder Christopher Poole (known as moot). Canvas has raised $3 million in Series A funding. Some of the previous angel investors that participated in this round include SV Angel, Lerer Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Founder Collective, and Joshua Schachter. Canvas’ previous round of funding was $625,000. Canvas allows users to easily edit images through the browser. Canvas added oEmbed support for several websites recently. OnSwipe Raises $5 Million In “Series Awesome”

OnSwipe is a tablet publishing company that has raised $5 million in “Series Awesome.” This past January OnSwipe raised $1 million in seed funding. This round of funding was led by Spark Capital and followed on by Lightbank. Yuri Milner, Lerer Ventures, SV Angel, Betaworks, Morado, Eniac Ventures, and Thrive Capital also participated in this round.

Digital Publisher Company Vook Raises $5.25 Million

Vook is a digital publisher company that has raised $5.25 million in Series A funding from VantagePoint Venture Partners and Floodgate. Vook publishes iPad, iPhone, Android book apps, and multimedia Kindle books. Vook has partnerships with Deepak Chopra, Seth Godin, and Tom Peters. Vook was founded in 2008 by Bradley Inman. Vook has raised $2.5 million in seed funding from Ron Conway, Baseline Ventures, Founder Collective, Maples Investments, and Lerer Ventures.
Facebook Co-Founder Eduardo Saverin and Other High-Profile Investors Send $8 Million To Qwiki

Qwiki has raised $8 million in series A funding. The largest investor in this round is Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Saverin has been very low-key with his investments due to the tumultuous experience he had as a Facebook co-founder. Essentially Mark Zuckerberg reduced Saverin’s equity to 0.03%, but gave him proper equity back when Saverin started talking to the press about his side of the story. His side of the story was made into a movie called The Social Network.
