LG Electronics Launching A U.S. Google Smart TV In May

LG Electronics is the world’s number two largest TV marker. They plan to launch an Internet-enabled TV based on Google in the U.S. on the week of May 21st. LG and Google are preparing for battle against the upcoming Apple smart TV product.

“Production of Google TVs will start from May 17 from our factory in Mexico and U.S. consumers will be able to buy the product from the week of May 21,” stated LG EVP of LG’s TV business unit Ro Seogho.

Google TV will allow viewers to access Google’s search services and YouTube from their TV screens. Ro said LG will consider expanding to Europe and Asia after reviewing sales performances in the U.S. Currently there is no details about shipment target, price details, or screen sizes.

The LG LS831 photo is showcasing that the phone will be a Sprint-only, has a 800 MHz CDMA radio with support for 1900 MHz, a front-facing camera, an a 5-megapixel rear camera. LG Signs Patent Deal With Microsoft

LG Electronics has just signed a patent licensing deal with Microsoft. Microsoft has made patent licensing deals with companies that manufacture devices using Android tablets and smartphones. According to a press release from Microsoft, LG signed a patent agreement that covers LG’s use of Android and the Chrome operating system on tablets, mobile phones, and other devices.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Intellectual Property Horacio Gutierrez believes that licensing patents is the best way to resolve intellectual property clashes. Currently Microsoft has 11 patent-licensing deals with Android and Chrome OS manufacturing companies. These 11 companies somehow compensate Microsoft for selling devices that run on Android or Chrome. Microsoft patent licensees include HTC, Samsung, Quanta, and Wistron.

Currently about 70% of all Android smartphones sold in the U.S. are receiving coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio. Microsoft is awarded with thousands of patents every year and was the 6th largest company in terms of number of patents awarded last year.

I’m sure Google is not happy about Microsoft profiting from their operating system. After Google’s acquisition of Motorola is complete, they will have access to over 17,000 new patents, which would definitely intensify the intellectual property war.

List Of LG Phones That Will Receive Android 4.0 Update

LG updated their Facebook page to announced which of their phones will receive an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system update. “LG will be offering the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS upgrade for a range of LG smart-phones which were introduced this year. The global upgrade schedule will begin in the second and third quarters of 2012, which will be followed by a global rollout.” This is the list of phones that will be receiving the update:

LG and AT&T Debut The First 4.5-Inch True HD AH-IPS Display In The LG Nitro HD

LG Electronics Inc. (SEO:066570) and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) held an event at the New Museum in New York’s SoHo district with celebrity photographer Tyler Shield to announce the LG Nitro HD, which is the first smartphone to have a true HD AH-IPS display. The Nitro HD will be available in AT&T stores or att.com starting tomorrow with a 2 year contract. It will cost $249.99. Other features of the LG Nitro HD include 4.5-inch display, 1280×720 pixel resolution, 500 nit display luminance, Qualcomm dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 processor, and slim design (5.27″x2.67″x0.41″). It has an 8 megapixel HD camera and 20GB of total memory (4GB on-board and 16GB of included microSD memory). The phone’s WiFi and DLNA offers multiple wireless HD content streaming options as well.

GM and LG Electronics Partner To Enhance Electric Cars

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) has teamed up with LG Electronics to develop electric cars that have capabilities that are greater than the Chevy Volt. LG subsidiary LG Chem supplies the lithium ion batteries that powers the Chevy Volt and other GM electric prototype cars. LG will now provide key components that is related to the architecture and structure.

“Many solutions for tomorrow’s transportation needs may be available more quickly by building on our partnership strategy,” stated GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky. “Consumers benefit by getting the latest fuel-saving technology faster if we work with the best suppliers and we save time and money in the development process.”

Google Acquires Motorola Mobility as Strategic Move in Patent War

Google announced this morning that it is acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. What does this mobile acquisition mean? According to Google, “Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.” The deal was made in cash and was unanimously approved by both companies’ boards.

TechCrunch reports that Google gains more than 17,000 patents in the acquisition. The move puts Motorola at the front of the Android line, but Google is quick to point out that the other Android partners aren’t upset. Samsung and HTC “welcome today’s news” and “welcome the news of today’s acquisition,” while both Sony Ericsson and LG “welcome Google’s commitment to defending Android and its partners.” That all sounds a bit… scripted. Tell us how you really feel, Android partners!

Android has been Motorola’s sole OS since 2008, so in retrospect, the acquisition isn’t a complete surprise. Google officially states that the acquisition will help the company “better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies.” That statement makes it most clear what the purpose of this move is: game on, this is war.

T-Mobile has officially announced the price of the 8.9-inch 3D-capable G-Slate tablet from LG. The tablet is powered by a Tegra 2 processor and Android Honeycomb operating system. It can connect to T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network and output 1080p video. The price is $529.99 with a 2 year contract and $100 mail in rebate. Below is the press release:
