There are several websites that make it easy to stream video from webcams on the Internet, but sometimes the equipment is expensive. Livestream, a website known for streaming live events, has created hardware to make live streaming on the Internet easier for all types of cameras. Livestream has announced Broadcaster, which is a small red box that plugs into any camera and it encodes the video in real-time HD.

The real-time HD is then streamed to the Livestream website using a 3G/4G USB modem or WiFi connection without needing a computer.

Broadcaster can be used as a battery-powered desktop encoder as well. The cost is only $495 for Broadcaster. Most other HD encoding devices cost between $1,000 and $5,000. The device was created to encourage people to subscribe to Livestream’s unlimited HD streaming for $45 per month.

“The missing link to accelerate adoption was seamlessly integrating live video from any prosumer camera to our service without the need for a computer,” stated Livestream CEO Max Haot.

Mogulus has decided to rebrand themselves under a new name: Livestream.com. The last time I wrote about Mogulus was around July 2008 when they raised $10 million in funding from Gannett. As part of the funding, Mogulus had to provide online broadcasting services to all of Gannett’s properties.

This week Mogulus decided to rebrand themselves into LiveStream.com. The company signed up about 1,000 accounts that are paying $350 per month for online broadcasting services. Livestream has about $12.7 million in reserves. Mogulus had raised $1.5 million in Series A from private investors in January 2008.

When the company decided to rebrand, they acquired the Livestream.com domain name for about $100,000. Through advertising opportunities with ScanScout and Google, the company is nearing profitability according to NewTeeVee.
