Google Inc (GOOG): Rockstar lawsuit to stay in California

A federal judge has rejected a request for a patent consortium called Rockstar to transfer patent litigation from California to Texas. Rockstar is backed by Microsoft, Apple, BlackBerry, Ericsson and Sony. These companies purchased patents from Nortel Networks for $4.5 billion after outbidding Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) in 2011.

“Rockstar” Uses Nortel’s Patents To Sue Google And Samsung

“Rockstar” is a consortium of companies such as Apple, BlackBerry, Sony, Ericsson, and Microsoft that bought thousands of patents that were owned by Nortel for $4.5 billion.  Google attempted to purchase those patents, but their deal fell through.  This is one of the major reasons why Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12 billion.

Google Receives Approval To Buy Motorola


Google’s $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility has been approved. However the U.S. and European Union government said that they will be ensuring that patents critical to the telecom industry would not be abused.
