A group of American universities have banded together to offer their campuses high speed computer networks beyond anything that is currently commercially available. The Gig.U project will offer one-gigabit connections to university campuses and their surrounding areas, which the project hopes will draw companies to the areas. The New York Times reports that in the test program in a small area near Case Western, three startups moved to the neighborhood within three months.

Warning: Don’t watch this video if you are disturbed by the sight of blood.

North Carolina State University mechanical engineering student Andrew Richards came up with a way for an artificial dynamic heart system to keep the heart of a pig beating outside of the body. The dynamic heart system is able to pump fluid through the pig’s heart so that it works in a very realistic manner. The machine is created using a pressurized saline solution. This solution allows researchers to monitor the pumping heart internally to find out which surgical methods work for repairing heart valves. Researchers are able to conduct pig heart experiments by making a deal with pork processing facilities.
