Walmart Acquires Social Media Tracking Company OneRiot

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) has acquired mobile and social ad targeting company OneRiot. OneRiot will be integrated into Walmart Labs. OneRiot recently shifted their business model from a search portal to monetizing its real-time ad network. Now OneRiot provides its social targeting service for mobile ads within apps.

In 2009, OneRiot launched a service called RiotWise, an ad format that places content based on their position in a real-time feed. RiotWise Trending Ads is a stream of ads that are related to trending topics in the social web.

Interest profiles, demographics, and social influence are some of the characteristics for brands that OneRiot tracks. Walmart has a major interest in this data-mining technology. OneRiot tracks social media conversations from Twitter and Facebook.

Walmart also recently acquired social media startup company Kosmix earlier this year. Kosmix also was been integrated with Walmart Labs.

OneRiot Search Engine Adds Real-Time Indexing

OneRiot has updated their search algorithm to include real-time data for link indexing and ranking. Some of the search results from the real-time stream are powered by Digg and Twitter. OneRiot’s Pulse stream uses a similar ranking system as Google PageRank.

The Pulse search algorithm has been around since OneRiot launched, but they have improved it since then. Pulse’s results will be considered based on domain authority, timeliness, individual reputation, etc. Pulse accounts for credible Twitter and Digg users.

“We’re also getting a lot of leverage from our Artificial Intelligence systems that constantly ‘learn’ how to improve the way we rank results,” stated the OneRiot Blog recently.

OneRiot Firefox Plugin Makes Google Results A Lot More Interesting

There are many companies out there that believe they have created something revolutionary by building their own social search (i.e. aggregating content from various other searches). Kosmix is a pretty good example of such a search engine. But this is the first time I’ve seen someone build social search around Google through the use of a Firefox plugin. Above is screenshot of the plugin being used.
