Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen has put Allan Island up for sale. The island is near Anacortes, Washington. The island is named after a Navy War hero. Allen bought the island in the early 90′s and this is his second attempt at selling it off. He put the island up for sale at a price of $13.5 million, which is down about $11 million since he tried selling it in 2005. The island is 292 acres of forest and beach land.
It’s time for another update on everyone’s favorite fledgling social network, and Google+ appears to be growing up very fast! Click through for stories on calculating Google+’s millions of users, upcoming changes and chances for users to help make those changes happen, and some info on why you can’t use a pseudonym on your Google Profile.

Google+ is supposed to hit 10,000,000 users tomorrow, based on Paul Allen’s analysis. The site saw a 350% increase in users between July 4th and July 10th, calculated by Allen’s surname popularity-based model. Allen is the founder of Ancestry.com, and his Google+ algorithm uses data from the US Census.

In other names-related news, Google will be suspending Google Profiles with pseudonymous usernames. New World Notes cites this as evidence that Google “still doesn’t get social.” It’s also evidence that Google is very serious about Google+ (and thus Google Profiles) being like real life, and wants the virtual identities to stay firmly outside of Google’s realm of reality.

Vic Gundrota promises in a post on his Google+ profile that there will be changes to Google+ next week, based on users’ criticisms of the network. Users have been commenting on the post with what they hope to see updated in the network.

Gmail Engineering Manager Mark Striebeck posted on his own Google+ profile that the Gmail–Google+ integration is on its way. He’s hosting hangouts through the afternoon today, chatting with “little focus groups” of 9 users for 15 minutes at a time. Striebeck says about 50 people will get to take part in this round, and that there will be more in the future.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen was interviewed on 60 Minutes about his new book “Idea Man.” In Idea Man, Allen was very transparent about his relationship with Bill Gates during the start of Microsoft. Allen was highly critical of Gates’ management style. Around the 6:40 minute mark, you will see Gates getting into strong arguments with Microsoft employees. However Allen admitted that Gates was still fair as long as you convinced him that you knew what you were talking about.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was co-founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The two met when Gates was an 8th grader and Allen was a 10th grader at a private school in Seattle. The two of them ended up at Harvard University and dropped out together to create Microsoft. Allen has recently written a book called “Idea Man: A Memoir by the Co-founder of Microsoft” that goes on sale on April 17th. The book contains information about how Bill Gates kept on reducing Paul Allen’s stake in the company.

According to Paul Allen’s spokesman David Postman, the book is “a very balanced portrayal of their relationship.” He added “Paul clearly values the input and the ideas and energy of Bill Gates.” In the book, it appears that Allen did not receive enough credit for his work at the company.

“While my recollection of many of these events may differ from Paul’s, I value his friendship and the important contributions he made to the world of technology and at Microsoft,” said Bill Gates.

However a majority of Allen’s wealth was created under the leadership of Bill Gates long after Allen had left the company. Microsoft isn’t the only major technology company where a co-founder received a lot of wealth long after leaving the company. Eduardo Saverin’s net worth substantially increased several years after leaving Facebook. Same with Steve Wozniak at Apple.

Two years ago, Allen was recovering from chemotherapy from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Gates was one of Allen’s most frequent visitors. Allen described Gates as being “everything you’d want from a friend, caring and concerned.” However Allen said that he had eavesdropped in a conversation that Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates had about diluting Allen’s equity after he had his first brush with cancer in 1982. Allen said he charged into the room angrily and the dilution never happened after that.

“I had helped start the company and was still an active member of management, though limited by my illness, and now my partner and my colleague were scheming to rip me off,” stated Allen in the book. “It was mercenary opportunism, plain and simple.”

Eventually Allen retained only a certain amount of equity and spent a large portion on several investments like Charter Communciations, Asymetrix Corp., and Digeo Inc. He also bought the Portland Trailblazers and the Seattle Seahawks. Some of these investments paid off and some have failed.

Back in August 2010 Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen filed a lawsuit against Google, Facebook, Apple, eBay, Yahoo!, AOL, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, and YouTube over patent infringement. In December 2010, Allen’s case was thrown out by a federal judge in Seattle. U.S. District Court Judge Marsha Pechman had told Allen that he had until December 28th to file an amended lawsuit because it was too vague.

Allen filed an expanded version of the lawsuit with more details about how the companies were violating his patents. The filing has about 40 exhibits that include screenshots of websites. Allen’s patent includes systems that automatically call up and display related content. This approach is used by many e-retailers.

In late October Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen filed a lawsuit against AOL, Apple, eBay, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Office Depot, Staples, Yahoo!, and YouTube. The court agreed with Google that Allen “lacks adequate factual detail to satisfy the dictates of Twombly and Iqbal” and “fails to provide sufficient factual detail as suggested by Form 18.” Google said that Allen was too vague to meet the standard that was set under Ashcroft v. Iqbal, 129 S. Ct. 1937 (2009) and Bell Atl. Corp. v. Twombly, 550 U.S. 544 (2007). AOL used the same argument. Therefore the case against Google and AOL has been dismissed. Allen has until December 28th to refile an amended complaint where he must specify the products or devices that infringes upon his patents. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen has donated $26 million to Washington State University. The donation is going toward’s WSU’s School for Global Animal Health. The school will be renamed to the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health. The 62,000 square foot building will be named the Paul G. Allen Center for Global Animal Health.

“Washington State University has been important to me since I was a student there in the 1970s,” stated Allen. “Our family foundation, under the leadership of my sister Jody, has supported a number of programs at WSU. And today, I am happy to be able to make a significant personal gift to help WSU broaden its reach and touch many more lives.” Allen had attended WSU for two years before he dropped out to take a computer programming job in Boston. In 1996, Allen donated $3.1 million to his old fraternity Phi Kappy Theta to build a high-tech house.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), eBay Inc. (NASDAQ:EBAY), AOL, Inc. (NYSE:AOL), Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), Office Depot, Inc. (NYSE:ODP), Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS), Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO), and Facebook all got together to fight back against the lawsuit that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen filed against them. Google led the response team by saying that the lawsuit does not back up its claims that they are violating approaches that were pioneered by Interval Research, a defunct incubator company that was financed by Allen.

On October 18, Google and YouTube filed a motion to dismiss the case. Below is an excerpt from Google’s motion:

“Interval must do more than merely state that the law has been violated – Interval must plead sufficient facts to show that it has a plausible claim for relief. In sum, Interval is not entitled to waste Court and party resources with a scattershot Complaint against multiple Defendants that fails to give any indication as to which products or services Interval contends are infringing and the factual basis for such a claim. Interval’s Complaint is so devoid of any facts to support its infringement contentions that it is impossible for Google to reasonably prepare a defense. At the very minimum, Interval must identify with particularity the products or services accused of infringement and the factual basis for any claim that such products and services allegedly infringe the patents-in-suit. Since Interval has failed to do so, its Complaint should be dismissed.”
