To prepare for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the military police in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are testing out criminal-detecting glasses. The glasses have cameras that are capable of detecting faces in crowds. The camera can analyze 46,000 biometric points at up to 400 faces per second. The camera then scans through a database of 13 million wanted people to see if there are any matches. The glasses can zoom in from 12 miles away, but will be typically used for managing crowds at within 50 meters. These glasses seem to be inspired by crime-fighting robot superhero RoboCop. [Engadget]

There is a Rocky statue in Philadelphia and it is an attraction. What Detroit needs is a statue of a movie hero as well. After all Detroit is becoming the “Hollywood of the Midwest.” In an initiative that started from a random tweet to Detroit Mayor Bing, Kickstarter has a $50,000 campaign to get a statue of RoboCop erected in the city. So far over $16,000 has been raised across 878 people. About 40 days are left! [RoboCop Kickstarter]
Detroit, Michigan Mayor Dave Bing wrote on Twitter “There are not any plans to erect a statue of RoboCop.” He also wrote “Thank you for your suggestion.” A debate about the statue idea spread across the Internet ever since. Some people believe that it would spur tourism and positive attention for the city. There is also now a Facebook page called “Build a statue of Robocop in Detroit.” The sci-fi movie RoboCop depicted the city of Detroit as a crime wasteland. [Detroit Free Press]
