The Motorola Mobility chairman and CEO Sanjay Jha is defending the $799 price tag of the Motorola Xoom tablet. The Xoom tablet runs on Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. The $799 32GB tablet runs on 3G and the WiFi version costs $599. Jha is defending the price because the device is compatible with Verizon’s 4G network. “We felt that our ability to deliver 50Mb/s would justify the $799 price point. It is 32GB with 3G and a free upgrade to 4G. Being competitive with iPad is important. We feel that from the hardware and capabilities we deliver we are at least competitive and in a number of ways better [than the iPad],” said Jha in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:MMI) has announced that the Xoom tablet will sell for a price of $799 without subsidies. The WiFi-only version will cost $600 according to CEO Sanjay Jha. The Xoom runs on Android. “I am as focused on Android as I ever have been. As a result of Nokia adopting Microsoft it’s possible that some of the other players concentrate on Android,” said Jha. Telecommunications company Motorola Inc. has released the financial figures for their second quarter. The company reported net income of $26 million. This is higher than a year ago in the same quarter when the company reported a $4 million net income. The reason why the company saw a profit increase was because of their aggressive cost cutting initiatives.
The revenue for the quarter was $5.5 billion which has dropped substantially compared to last year. Motorola reported $8.1 billion in revenues last year. Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said that he believes the company will see a turnaround by this fall as the company launches several new products.
Motorola’s wireless device business saw revenue fall 45% to $1.8 billion. The operating loss this quarter was $253 million. Last year’s operating loss was $346 million.

In the fourth quarter, Motorola reported that they had a net loss of $3.6 billion. Shortly after the announcement, CFO Paul Liska stepped down. However Liska is claiming that he was fired for bringing up some of the issues involved with the company’s financials.
Liska decided to file a retaliatory discharged lawsuit which involves a breach of contract related to his firing. Liska said that the financial forecasts were not accurate and ignored the facts that were known to Motorola co-CEOs Sanjay Jha and Greg Brown. Liska brought up concerns to the company’s audit team before presentations with credit agencies were made. If the presentations were not changed, then it would lead to credit deterioration by the agencies.
Liska was eventually fired in January 29 and officially left on February 19 according to an SEC filing. The filing reported that Liska was fired due to “serious misconduct and incompetence.” Ouch.
