Google co-founder Sergey Brin wrote a Google+ post that clarified some of the details in his interview with The Guardian over the weekend. “My thoughts got particularly distorted in the secondary coverage in a way that distracts from my central tenets so I think they are worth clarifying here.” Brin said that he believes the biggest threat to Internet freedom is government filtering of political dissent. He said that the U.S. has come close to adopting similar techniques to combat piracy and other vices, which could be misguided and dangerous.

“I have much admiration for two of the companies we discussed — Apple and Facebook. I have always admired Apple’s products. In fact, I am writing this post on an Imac and using an Apple keyboard I have cherished for the past seven years. Likewise, Facebook has helped to connect hundreds of millions of people, has been a key tool for political expression and has been instrumental to the Arab Spring. Both have made key contributions to the free flow of information around the world,” said Brin. The Guardian portrayed Brin as saying that Facebook and Apple’s walled gardens are a threat to Internet freedom.

Brin added that regardless of how you feel about digital ecosystems or about Google, “please do not take the free and open Internet for granted from government intervention.”

Sergey Brin gave a rather candid interview in The Guardian. Brin had warned that there were “very powerful forces that have lined up against the open internet on all sides and around the world” and that he was more worried than he had been in the past. Among the forces he listed was Apple, Facebook, SOPA, PIPA, and the movie industry.

Brin, 38, said that Facebook and Apple have restrictive walled gardens that tightly control what software can be released on their platforms. Brin also said that he was concerned about the efforts countries like China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran censors and restricts the Internet.

Brin said that Facebook and Apple having their own proprietary platforms and access to their users risks stifling innovation and balkanizing the web. “There’s a lot to be lost,” he said. “For example, all the information in apps – that data is not crawlable by web crawlers. You can’t search it.”

Brin said that him and Larry Page would not have been able to create Google if the Internet was dominated by Facebook back then. You would have to play by their rules, which was really restrictive. Even though Facebook has been “sucking down Gmail contacts for many years,” the social network has not made it easy for users to switch their data to other services.

After bashing on Facebook and Apple a bit, Brin decided to focus on the entertainment industry. He said that the industry was “shooting itself in the foot, or maybe worse than in the foot” because they were lobbying for legislation to block websites offering pirated material. PIPA and SOPA would have led to the U.S. using the same technology China and Iran has been criticized for using.

According to several Google employee sources with the New York Times, the company will start selling a pair of glasses that will be able to stream information to the person wearing them in real-time. The glasses will be available to the public by the end of the year. The glasses will cost between about $250 and $600.

The glasses will be Android-based and it will have a small screen that will be a few inches from the person’s eye. The glasses will also have a 3G or 4G data connection and it will have a number of sensors that include motion and GPS. The glasses supposedly look like a pair of Oakley Thumps.

The glasses would also have a unique navigation system that can be controlled with head tilting for scrolling and clicking. The glasses will also have a low-resolution built-in camera to overlay information about locations and surrounding buildings. However the glasses were not designed to be worn constantly.

The Google X team is currently discussing what types of privacy implications of the glasses to consider. For example, Google would want people to know if they were being recorded through the glasses. The glasses are being built at the Google X offices, which is a secret lab run by Sergey Brin. Steve Lee, the engineer that built Google Latitude, is highly involved in the project.

Google has hired Apple senior director of product integrity Simon Prakash from Apple according to VentureBeat. Prakash is most likely working with Sergey Brin on a secret research project.

This is the first time that Google has hired away an employee at a senior position from Apple. This is happening at the middle of an investigation by the Department of Justice about Google and Apple allegedly working on a “no poach” agreement. The agreement was believed to be made between Pixar, Intel, Google, Apple, Lucasfilm, and Intuit.

Prakash had worked at Apple for over 8 years and was most recently at the product integrity position. He was responsible for product quality across all Apple products from iPhones to Macs. Currently Apple has the best reputation for product quality according to J.D. Power.

When Prakash started at Apple 8 years ago, he was a senior reliability manager. Before Apple, he worked as the director of engineering design validation at Cielo Communications. He had also worked as a reliability and FA manager at 3Com.

Stop Online Piracy Act is a bill that was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in October 2011 by Lamar Smith (R-TX). This Act would allow the Department of Justice and copyright holders to seek court orders against websites accused of copyright infringement that would prevent online ad networks and payment facilitators from doing business with those websites. Opponents in this bill believe that this is Internet censorship. Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, PayPal co-founder Elon Musk, and Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang oppose the bill. Their letter will appear as a paid ad in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other newspapers.

The timing of this letter coincides with the scheduled committee vote taking place tomorrow with a revised version of the Act. The revision of SOPA will “give the U.S. government the power to censor the Web using techniques similar to those used by China, Malaysia and Iran.” Below is the full letter from the Internet executives:

An Open Letter to Washington
We’ve all had the good fortune to found Internet companies and nonprofits in a regulatory climate that promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, the creation of content and free expression online.
However we’re worried that the PROTECT IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act–which started out as well-meaning efforts to control piracy online–will undermine that framework.
These two pieces of legislation threaten to:
* Require web services, like the ones we helped found, to monitor what users link to, or upload. This would have a chilling effect on innovation;
* Deny website owners the right to due process of law;
* Give the U.S. Government the power to censor the web using techniques similar to those used by China, Malaysia and Iran; and
* Undermine security online by changing the basic structure of the Internet.
We urge Congress to think hard before changing the regulation that underpins the Internet. Let’s not deny the next generation of entrepreneurs and founders the same opportunities that we all had.
Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Netscape and Andreessen Horowitz
Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google
Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and Square
Caterina Fake, co-founder of Flickr and Hunch
David Filo, co-founder of Yahoo!
Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn
Arianna Huffington, co-founder of The Huffington Post
Chad Hurley, co-founder of YouTube
Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive and co-founder of Alexa Internet
Elon Musk, co-founder of PayPal
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) executives Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmdit offered $33 million to refurbish NASA’s Hangar One. As a result, the three executives would essentially be leasing the space from NASA to park eight of their private jets in there. Page, Brin, and Schmidt made the offer through their H211 airplane operations company this past September. NASA has not accepted the offer as of yet.

“We understand the interest and historic nature of the facility” stated NASA spokesperson Bob Jacobs. “We have to weigh that against the reality of constrained resources and use.”

If NASA agrees, then NASA would replace the outer panels of Hangar One. The outer panels have been removed since it was discovered that they contained lead paint and asbestos. NASA would remain the owner of the building and they would have the right to rent out areas of Hangar One that was not being used. Google would be able to use two-thirds of Hangar One’s floor space to park their 8 jets.

Hangar One was built in the 1930′s. Hangar One covers 8 acres and the height of the building is 198 feet. The Hangar was intended to house military airships. The building is so tall that fog is known to form in the upper levels of the facility.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) co-founder Sergey Brin has made a $500,000 grant to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is attempting to raise $28.3 million for its annual budget. The donation was made as part of a foundation created by Sergey and his wife Anne Wojcicki.

Every year Wikipedia hosts an annual fundraiser instead of using advertisements. The fundraiser will be running through January. Last year’s campaign raised $16 million towards the $20 million budget.

“If everyone reading this donated $5, our fundraiser would be over today,” stated Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. “Google might have close to a million servers. Yahoo has something like 13,000 staff. We have 679 servers and 95 staff. Wikipedia is the #5 site on the web and serves 450 million different people every month – with billions of page views. Commerce is fine. Advertising is not evil. But it doesn’t belong here. Not in Wikipedia.”

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has a research and development lab that many employees do not know about called Google X. There are over hundreds of projects including dinner plates, robots that fetch groceries, and smart refrigerators.

An unknown Google engineer says that the lab is run mysteriously in 2 different office buildings. One of the buildings is for logistics and the other is for robotics. Sergey Brin is heavily involved in the labs projects. Scientists that have been hired from Microsoft, Nokia, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and NYU work on the day-to-day projects in the Google labs.

The Google Lab is supposedly headed by Sebastian Thrun, who is best known for developing the world’s first driverless car. Andrew Ng, an A.I. expert and Stanford professor is also believed to be working at the Google lab.

Some of the ideas created at Google X may not see the light of day, but others may go on to lead a revolution such as the driverless cars idea.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has received a patent on their logo doodles. It took about 10 years of lobbying to get the patent. Doodles are the customized version of the Google logo that the company puts on their homepage during the holidays. Above is an example of a doodle that the company used for Thanksgiving. Google co-founder Sergey Brin was credit for inventing the patent, which is entitled “System and Method For Enticing Users To A Web Site.” The first Google Doodle was for St. Patrick’s Day in 2000. Back in 2000, Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to hire Apple CEO Steve Jobs as their company CEO. Around then, Google’s investors said that their company needed some adult supervision through with an experienced CEO. John Doerr arranged interviews between Page and Brin with Andy Grove (Intel) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com). “…they would only consider one person: Steve Jobs,” wrote Wired senior writer Steven Levy. Jobs was too busy running Apple at the time and was gearing up to launch the first iPod. Eventually Doerr convinced the two to hire Novell CEO Eric Schmidt.
