Songkick is an online service that alerts fans about local concerts by their favorite artists. The company launched in London around 2007. Songkick makes the idea of going to a concert as easy as looking up a restaurant on Yelp. About five million people visit Songkick per month and they have just received $10 million in funding from Sequoia Capital.

“The investment will allow us to keep doing what we’re doing, but faster. We created this idea of a historical concert archive with gigographies for every single artist. We released the most highly regarded concert app on iOS, which scans the music on your phone. We were the first concert-related service to launch on Spotify. And we launched this partner network. Those are sort of the Round 1 innovations. We’ve got a slew of cool new things coming out that I’m very excited about. We’re investing in product, in world class talent. It’s a cost for start-ups,” stated Songkick CEO Ian Hogarth in an interview with The New York Times.

Foursquare has been rolling out a bundle of new updates this month, from inline photos and tip lists to redesigned apps, and is now introducing yet another new feature: events. Users previously could only check in at places, but Foursquare is now adding major events to their database. They gave events a test-run during SXSW conferences and are now partnered with ESPN, MovieTickets.com and Songkick. The partnerships mean that when users go to check in on Foursquare, they’ll see official pages to check in at sports events, movies and concerts.

To keep the UI clean, they explain that “each event appears in the app a couple hours before it starts.” The feature is already available in the iPhone app and at the foursquare.com web app and will be available on other platforms soon. Songkick is a website that does everything to help you find concerts. They can find concerts near you by having you entering your location. They can e-mail you alerts when concerts come up. They’ve got a plugin that helps you find concerts of the artists that you have in your iTunes, Winamp, iTunes, and Windows Media Player libraries.

“We’re always adding more listings because we want to make sure we have every single concert in existence—no matter how obscure the band or tiny the venue,” states the company’s About page. “We even index bands’ MySpace pages to make sure we have all their dates.”

Songkick is based in East London and was founded by Ian Hogarth, Pete Smith, and Michelle You. The investment was provided by several personal investors. One of the investors is Saul Klein, founding partner of The Accelerator Group. Y-Combinator provided Songkick with their initial funding.

The company website is available at: www.songkick.com. VentureBeat broke the funding news.
