Sears and Kmart Teaming With Sonic To Launch Movie Downloading Service Alphaline Entertainment

Sears Holding Corporation (NASDAQ:SHLD) and Kmart are partnering with Sonic Solutions to launch a service called Alphaline Entertainment. Alphaline Entertainment is an online service that will be selling downloadable movies online. Sonic’s RoxioNow is also known for powering the online movie rental service for Best Buy and Blockbuster. Alphaline will be renting out movies for $3.99 or $19.99 to buy new movies. Below is the full press release:

Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ:NOVI) has declared an intent to buy out Sonic Solutions as part of a $720 million deal. Sonic and Rovi will work together on creating digital video distribution software. Sonic is known for creating a premium programming service called RoxioNow. As part of the acquisition, Rovi will also gain ownership of DivX. The acquisition is expecting to close in early 2011. Sonic Solutions Acquires DivX In $323 Million Deal

Sonic Solutions has acquired digital media company DivX for $323 million as part of a cash and stock deal.  This deal puts DivX’s stock at about a $9.83 per share worth.  This is a 41% premium over Tuesday’s closing price at $6.95.  DivX is known for their codec software, which allows videos to be viewed across different players.  DivX earns most of its revenue from licensing technology to OEMs. [paidContent]

Roxio Launches Slide Show Creation Service

Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ: SNIC) subsidiary, Roxio has launched a new slide creation service.  Roxio Online’s slide show creation tool makes it easy to create web-based animations, captions, etc.  Roxio Online’s slide show offerings are similar to Slide, Google Picasa, and Photobucket. 

Users can upload JPGs, PNGs, BMPs, GIFs, and the photo limit is 20 MB.  There are over 150 one-click styles for PhotoShow.  Upgrading to video clip slide show web-based services are about $39.99.  Roxio slide shows are less Flashy and glittery than Slide.  Roxio also has stronger privacy options for their slide shows.

Free web pages for the slide show will be available through Roxio.  The slide shows will have the ability to be embedded on blogs and websites.  Roxio’s basic slide show services are available for free.
