amazon-slim
Amazon.com issued a warning that the Sony PS 3 Slim is having supply shortages.  This is why they are limiting the sales of the Slim to one per person.  Sony Europe says that they have “trucks and trailers” of the Slim on traveling across the continent overseas.  Better luck in September if you want to get a hold of the device.

EA Exec Patrick Soderland Says XBox 360 Limits Have Been Maxed Out

Earlier this month, Microsoft’s Shane Kim reported to VentureBeat that he firmly believes that the XBox 360 has a life cycle through 2015.  Gaming consoles generally have a 10 year life cycle or slightly longer before becoming obsolete.  However Kim’s views slightly contradict the views of EA executive Patrick Soderland in terms of being able to push the console to its limits.

“We’ve maxed out the 360, but we haven’t maxed out the PS3? stated Soderland in an interview with Official Xbox Magazine. “We’ll see developers inside [Electronic Arts] getting to understand the PS3 better and we’re getting more power out of PS3 right now.” Soderland is a Senior VP of EA Games in Europe.

Even though Soderland said that the 360 is maxed out, he still admitted that it is his favorite console and he cannot wait to see what they do with Project Natal.

War Of The Motion Controllers: Wii Motion Plus, Project Natal, and PS Motion

360-logowii-logops3-logo
The top selling consoles are now in a new war besides who has the best online play and who can sell the most units.  I am dubbing this next battle, the War Of The Motion Controllers.

Sony’s motion controller is a black wand with a glowing purple bulb at the top.  The Sony PS controller uses motion capture through a PS Eye camera tracking device at the top of the stick.  However The PS Motion will not be available for purchase until Spring 2010.

Microsoft’s Project Natal is the code name of the motion controller device that they plan to launch sometime next year.  The device is controlled by a black box with several built in sensors.  Engadget has a demo video of Natal in action.

Nintendo’s Wii Motion Plus sensor will arrive in a few weeks and will be bundled with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.  The game and Motion Plus bundle will cost about $59.  The Motion Plus on its own will cost $20.  One of the major differences between the Motion Plus and the original controller is that the new controller works with smaller hand motions, offering precision without having to exaggerate movements.

Xbox Live: 17 Million Active, Sony Playstation Network: 20 Million Active

Several weeks ago, Microsoft claimed to have about 17 million active users on Xbox Live.  There are about 28 million Xbox 360 units that have sold so that makes it about 60% of those who own the console are also on the online service.  Basic services are free and the advanced online feature is about $50 per year.  About 56% of those who own use Xbox Live pay for the service.

Recently a Microsoft document somehow leaked to the press and revealed that about 56% of the 28 million consoles sold pay for the service.  That is about 15.7 million people paying and it comes out to be about $784 million revenue for Microsoft.

Yesterday Sony announced that they have about 20 million users on the PlayStation Network.  This includes people using the PSP and PSIII.  The PSIII has about 20 million units sold  The PSP shifted about 50 million units worldwide.  The Playstation Network has about $180 million in download sales to date.  Its unclear how much the Playstation Network makes from an overall standpoint.

Based on these numbers, it seems like that the console wars are pretty close in terms of converting users from playing in the living room to playing with people online.  And both companies are making a healthy revenue doing so.
