On a Quora Q&A post, former Apple employee Chad Little answered the question:

How did Apple.com become the de facto spot for movie trailers? The major record companies giving up control to iTunes is a blunder I can fathom. Not sure why the Hollywood studios still debut their films on Apple.com, though.


It turns out that Apple was disgusted by a low quality Phantom Menace trailer that Lucasfilm put on their website. They contacted the Star Wars web team through DNS records and set up a meeting. Then they showed off QuickTime’s quality over RealVideo. The trailer surpassed 1 million downloads and became the most popular web video of the Internet at that time.

Lucasfilm Ltd. director and founder/chairman and Star Wars franchise creator George Lucas announced plans to convert all 6 Star Wars movies into 3D and re-release each movie one episode per year starting in 2012. What happens when you dress up like Darth Vader and wear pink hospital scrubs then go out and try to rob a bank in a grocery store? You end up in the Pulse2.com Hall of Shame. Gregory Sanchez dressed up in the aforementioned outfit and tried to rob a Bank of America branch within the same Albertsons grocery store that he worked at as a “courtesy clerk.” Sanchez had a hatchet, a black wig, and gloves too. “The robber’s elaborate disguise did not keep from getting caught later on,” stated Captain Mike Parker. The crime took place in the 19000 block of Colima Road in Los Angeles. Sanchez is being held on a $100,000 bail. [LA Times]

George Lucas and Lucasfilm is having Star Wars re-released in 3D. The first movie to be released in 3D is The Phantom Menace in 2012. Fox will be distributing the 3D films. “Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right,” stated Visual Effects Supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic John Knoll. “It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience.” [TechLand]
