Nokia Using ST-Ericsson Chips For Windows Phone 8 Smartphones

When Nokia releases smartphones powered by the Windows Phone 8 operating system, they will use silicon from ST-Ericsson according to STMicroelectronics CEO Carlo Bozotti. Windows Phone devices currently use chips from Qualcomm. ST-Ericsson is a joint venture between STMicroelectronics and Ericsson.

California Institute Of Technology Suing Big Phone Companies Over Sensor Patents

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is suing LG, Nokia, Pantech, Toshiba, STMicroelectronics, Seti Co., and Siliconfile Technologies Inc. over 9 sensor technology patents. Caltech filed a complain on November 24th in Los Angeles federal court. Caltech is seeking unspecific damages for willful infringement. Last year Caltech sued six digital camera companies which include Canon and Nikon over pixel sensors. Caltech did research and filed for these patents as part of a NASA project. The case is currently filed as California Institute of Technology v. STMicroelectronics, 10-9099, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles.) [BusinessWeek]
