According to Bloomberg, T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom is now considering selling off the company to MetroPCS, the fifth largest carrier in the U.S. MetroPCS and T-Mobile would merge under a single entity or they might sell off the business entirely.

T-Mobile’s network will be compatible with the iPhone later this year even if they are not selling the device. T-Mobile is working with Ericsson and Nokia-Siemens for their $4 billion 4G LTE deployment. This addresses T-Mobile’s lack of the iPhone and a more advanced 4G LTE network. Ericsson and Nokia have experience building 4G LTE when they worked with Verizon Wireless and other telecom companies. T-Mobile also said today that they have secured spectrum from AT&T last week as part of the merger breakup fee.

Between the spectrum from AT&T and their own spectrum, T-Mobile said that they hope to cover 75% of its top 25 markets with LTE. However T-Mobile said that they lack sufficient spectrum for a broader deployment of LTE. On top of LTE, T-Mobile is focusing on HSPA+ technology, which they argue is fast enough to be called 4G. T-Mobile plans to use 1900-megahertz spectrum for their upgraded HSPA+ network and plans to have several of their markets covered by the end of the year.

The court battle between Oracle and Google has caused some documents to be opened up containing photos of the first Android prototype from 2006. This phone was a prototype for a “Google Mass Market Phone” and it shows a portrait QWERTY keypad with a landscape screen on top. The 2006 prototype would have had a 200MHz ARM Cortex v9 processor, 64MB RAM, 3G connection, USB connectivity, Bluetooth 1.2, miniSD memory expansion, and 2 megapixel camera on the back. “At Google, we believe we can be successful in transforming the mobile experience-in the same way we have revolutionised the fixed internet experience,” stated Google in a document from back in 2006. Google never released this prototype, but they did approach T-Mobile USA with this device and was considering releasing it for $9.99 per month with an unlimited data plan.

The four major carriers in the U.S. have been tested for how fast they run. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile all have some kind of 4G technology whether it is LTE, WiMAX, or HSPA+. Each of these carriers claim that they have the fastest or most reliable, but who is being truthful. PCWorld conducted a test called “2012 Mobile Speed Test” and found that AT&T’s 4G LTE service is the fastest download speeds while Verizon’s 4G LTE network had the fastest upload speeds. The T-Mobile HSPA+ 21 network was the fastest 3G service. Sprint’s 3G ad WiMAX technology was behind all of their competition. The real-world speed tests were conducted in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington DC.

AT&T Fastest 4G Service, T-Mobile Fastest in 3G, PCWorld Mobile Speed Tests Reveal
Sprint lags badly behind in both 3G and 4G speeds, 13-city testing shows.

San Francisco, April 17, 2012—Mobile internet service is a major monthly expense for most American consumers, and a very big business for U.S. wireless companies. The marketing machines of those companies are now in high gear, touting their services as the industry transitions from 3G service to the much faster 4G. Problem is, everybody’s service is “4G”, “most reliable”, “biggest”, “fastest” and “best,” if you believe all the names and claims flying about on TV, radio, print media and the Web.

That’s why PCWorld has once again hit the road to measure the real-world performance of the four major wireless services on America’s streets and in its coffee shops. During February and March of this year, PCWorld measured the speeds of the major U.S. carriers’ 3G and 4G wireless services from 130 locations in 13 major U.S. cities.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE STUDY

AT&T had the fastest download speeds of any 4G service, along with an HSPA+ service that’s very competitive with 3G services–a compelling service combination for AT&T dual-mode phones.

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 21 service proved faster overall than comparable 3G services in our study, and the carrier’s high-end HSPA+ 42 service held its own with the 4G services of its larger competitors. Those services, and the array of flexible and affordable plans it offers, make T-Mobile a good choice for many wireless users.

Verizon has 4G service in many more locations than other providers, but in most localities the download speed of its 4G service doesn’t match AT&T’s (though its upload speeds are faster, more often than not). And Verizon’s 3G speeds have not improved much, especially when compared to the competition.

Sprint is a consistent laggard in the wireless speed races. The company appears to have virtually stopped developing its network while looking for a way to transition from its outdated WiMAX 4G technology to LTE.

“The big surprise in this year’s study is T-Mobile’s performance,” says PCWorld Senior Editor Mark Sullivan, who designed and managed the study. “By offering data speeds that are very competitive with AT&T and Verizon along with its affordable data plans, T-Mobile is proving why its proposed acquisition by AT&T last year would have been bad news for US consumers.”

“The other (rather sobering) surprise in this year’s data is Sprint’s poor performance, both in 3G and 4G service. The carrier’s speeds suggest that both the Sprint CDMA and WiMAX networks have seen very little investment and upgrade over the past year—in a mobile data market where the rule is ‘grow faster or parish.’”

While a majority of wireless consumers still use slower 3G devices today, most will transition to faster 4G devices over the next five years as carriers push them to upgrade to newer 4G devices when their contracts expire, Sullivan says. Meanwhile wireless companies will continue to increase their networks’ data transfer speeds to compete for new customers and retain old ones.

FASTEST 3G AND 4G SERVICES BY CITY:

Atlanta — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Boston — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Chicago — 3G: AT&T; 4G: AT&T
Dallas — 3G: AT&T; 4G: AT&T
Denver — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
Los Angeles — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Las Vegas — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
New Orleans — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
New York — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
San Jose — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
San Francisco — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T
Seattle — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: Verizon
Washington DC — 3G: T-Mobile; 4G: AT&T

“Our annual speed study is an important part of what we do at PCWorld,” explains VP, Editorial Director, Steve Fox. “Many consumers look to us for an unbiased, independent, empirical assessment of the wireless technology and services being offered in the U.S. today.”

“It’s exciting to see the data speed wars heating up as the wireless providers move from 3G to 4G technology in their networks and devices,” Fox says. “We only hope that the competition eventually translates into better performance and better value for consumers.”

Our testing cities:Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington DC

The four major U.S. wireless carriers have made an agreement to work with the FCC for creating a central database to track and disable stolen mobile devices. The database will be designed for tracking phones that are reported as stolen and deny them the ability to access voice and data services.

Verizon and Sprint currently block phones that are reported as stolen and from being reactivated. AT&T and T-Mobile do not have this service available on-hand right now. All four companies have agreed to be a part of the new database. Electronics are now the most common stolen type of property with mobile phones accounting for over 80% of this kind of theft.

Each of the major carriers will build individual databases within the next 6 months and integrate them over the following 12 months. The smaller carriers will also join the database at that point.

The Federal Communications Commission has rejected a notion that job cuts at T-Mobile are a sign that regulators should have allowed AT&T to buy them out. “In a short period of time, T-Mobile has re-emerged as a vibrant competitor in the mobile marketplace,” stated an FCC representative in an interview with AllThingsD. “Competition benefits all wireless consumers. The bottom line is that AT&T’s proposal to acquire a major competitor was unprecedented in scope and the company’s own confidential documents showed that the merger would have resulted in significant job losses.”

T-Mobile USA CEO Philipp Humm sent a memo to employees announcing that 1,900 jobs would be eliminated nationwide because of the closure of seven call center facilities. About 3,300 positions are being slashed in total, but 1,400 jobs are being added at the remaining 17 call centers. “Looking ahead, we will also be restructuring other parts of the company,” said Humm.

Below is the full memo:

Dear colleagues,

I have difficult news to share today: we are consolidating our call center operations and closing seven of our 24 facilities. This decision was not easily reached, but it is a necessary measure. The reality is our cost structure must be better optimized to match our customer base and call volumes.

The affected Customer Service facilities are Allentown, Pennsylvania; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Frisco, Texas; Brownsville, Texas; Lenexa, Kansas; Thornton, Colorado; and Redmond, Oregon. The consolidations will result in 1,900 net job reductions. Approximately 3,300 employees at the seven impacted facilities will be affected, and we will begin hiring immediately at the remaining 17 call centers to fill as many as
1,400 positions.

Impacted call centers will remain open for three months following this announcement. Affected customer service representatives will have the option to transfer to any of the remaining 17 call centers. Employees who choose not to transfer and are employed on the date the center closes, will be offered transition packages with severance pay and outplacement support. T-Mobile is partnering with an outplacement firm to provide on-site career centers at all seven facilities. Every employee will have access to a personal career coach and be offered job search training and tools. In addition, T-Mobile will pay for two months of continued health care coverage under COBRA (which is available for up to 18 months for eligible employees who elect this option).

Looking ahead, we will also be restructuring other parts of the company. It is important to note this will not include our customer service representatives in the remaining 17 call centers, technicians in engineering or front line employees in our T-Mobile corporate-owned stores. In other parts of the organization, the majority of changes will be announced by the end of May 2012. Senior leaders are intently focused on making the best possible choices standing on the foundation of our shared T-Mobile Values. The outcome will be an organization that is structured efficiently and closer to the customer. Leaders will share more information as plans evolve.

These are not easy steps to take — or, I know, to read. We must address our business realities so we can focus on getting T-Mobile back to growth.

Our commitment, as we go through this process, is to provide clear perspective and understandable rationale, be forthright in our communications regarding our decisions, and be respectful and compassionate in our treatment of affected individuals.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment and support.

With sincere appreciation,

Philipp Humm
CEO & President
T-Mobile USA

Deutsche Telekom has announced today that T-Mobile USA will be launching a high-speed LTE service sometime next year. However the most recent quarter was one of the most brutal for T-Mobile.

“For T-Mobile USA, the past year was characterized by significant challenges, particularly in the fourth quarter, following the market launch of the new Apple iPhone model by the three major national competitors in October,” stated T-Mobile.

In the fourth quarter, T-Mobile USA lost 802,000 contract customers and revenue has dropped 3.3% to $20.6 billion. T-Mobile is the last major U.S. carrier to announce LTE plans. T-Mobile will use a combination of spectrum that was acquired from AT&T and will put in $1.4 billion in additional investment to launch their LTE service.
