There.com is a 3D virtual world built around avatars. The website is now able to work for those who use the Mac OS X. There is also now a Facebook and IM plug-in that works with the site.

The name of the IM application on There is called ThereIM and the Facebook plug-in is called Facing There. Facing There is a way for avatars to showcase their Facebook profile.

There.com almost shut-down because of the amount of money necessary to keep the company going and the site wasn’t backed with strong revenues. But then Michael Wilson took over as CEO and kept the company moving along. Wilson was an early employee at eBay.

There Inc. was founded in 1998 and the closed beta started in July 2001. The site came out of beta in October 2003. In June 2004, There had a many layoffs and had to split the company into two parts: one for government contracts and the other for commercial.

There competes with Second Life, Moove, Kaneva, and Google Lively.
