Tim Cook has been profiled in this month’s issue of Fortune. Cook is being portrayed as a leader that is approachable. When a group of investors visited Apple as part of a “bus tour,” Apple CEO Tim Cook actually showed up to the meeting and answered questions diligently. This is something that Steve Jobs never did. As CEO, Cook also issued a dividend to shareholders and created a program to match employee gifts to charity. Cook also sits randomly with Apple employees in the cafeteria at lunchtime whereas Jobs typically dined with design chief Jonathan Ive. This is a small difference that employees have seen in terms of interacting with their CEO. In terms of shortcomings at the company since Jobs passed away is Siri. Siri is still in “beta” mode and it’s response time is considered slow. The servers and software powering Siri are inadequate. “People are embarrassed by Siri,” stated a former insider at the company. “Steve would have lost his mind over Siri.”

Mickey Drexler, J. Crew CEO and Apple board member, gave an interview at Fast Company event Innovation Uncensored recently. In the interview he said that “Steve’s [Steve Jobs] dream before he died was to design an iCar.”

“Look at the car industry; it’s a tragedy in America. Who is designing the cars?” Drexler said. “Steve’s dream before he died was to design an iCar.” Steve Jobs often spent time making designs while in his hospital bed.

Towards the end of the interview, Drexler said that he has sympathy for current Apple CEO Tim Cook. “The best job to have: Take over a company that’s doing poorly,” Drexler said. “Never take over a company that’s doing great. You know, I love Tim Cook, but I wouldn’t want his job!”

Apple and Samsung are in the middle of a heated patent battle, but the two sides have decided to meet in order to try and make a settlement. According to a court filing, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Gee-Sung Choi will participate in a settlement conference that will be overseen by U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero. This is not an indication that a resolution will be made, but this could lead to the two companies making their peace.

Before joining Apple, Cook worked at Compaq and spent 12 years at IBM.

Top Apple executives are meeting with top Samsung executives to settle their patent fight. This is a different stance than the late Apple CEO when he said he wanted to go “thermonuclear” with Android.

“Apple CEO Tim Cook does not seem to share his predecessor’s passion about laying all foes to waste. Cook appears to view litigation as a necessary evil, not a vehicle of cosmic revenge,” stated Paul Barrett at Bloomberg. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.” He also said, “I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong.”

Apple attacked Android partners HTC and Samsung by trying to say that they are making products which copies off of them. Barrett concluded that Apple’s case is weak. Apple’s argument is that both companies have phones that are “a rectangular product with four evenly rounded corners, a flat clear face covering the front of the product, [and] a large display screen under the clear surface.” Almost all smartphones look the same now and a lot of phones looked like the iPhone before it came out.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was spotted in China, which was his first time as Apple CEO. Cook visited the Apple Store in the Xidan district of Beijing. This is not Cook’s first visit to China. Cook was previously sent to China by Steve Jobs when issues came up with Foxconn. Jobs never visited China when he was CEO.

China Daily is speculating that Cook is there to meet with new telecommunications partner China Telecom, which began selling the iPhone 4S this month. There is a chance that he might be there to visit China Mobile to strike up a partnership. One of the biggest problems that Apple has in China is dealing with an “iPad” trademark dispute against Proview.
