Tech companies prepare to protest NSA tomorrow

Reddit, Mozilla, and Yahoo!’s Tumblr are preparing to protest the NSA tomorrow. The protest is called “The Day We Fight Back.” Other organizations that are participating in the protest includes the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Participants of the protest are being asked to “install banners to encourage their visitors to fight back against surveillance.” Internet users are being asked to develop memes and are being asked to change social media avatars to reflect the demands.

Tumblr gets SSL support

Popular blog platform Tumblr now has SSL security support, but it is not switched on by default. You have to turn on the security feature yourself. Tumblr has been testing SSL security for weeks now and you can turn it on from your settings. Users need to go to the Tumblr dashboard’s Account Settings and then toggle the switch.

‘Stuff on Scout’s Head’ Tumblr blog features dog balancing various items

There is a Tumblr blog where a dog named Scout wears various objects on his head called “Stuff on Scout’s Head.” The blog was created by Scout’s owner Jen Gillen. She came up with the idea after a friend told her to balance a toilet paper roll on the dog’s head. Gillen snaps a photo of Scout balancing the object and then passes him a treat for his job well done. Pet lovers on the Internet have fallen in love with the Tumblr blog. Yahoo! Is Paying Tumblr Founder David Karp $81 Million To Stay For 4 Years

Tumblr founder David Karp is being paid to stay at Yahoo! for the next 4 years.  You may recall that Yahoo! acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion in May 2013.  Karp did not expect to sell his company to Yahoo!, but he was motivated to sell because Yahoo! was giving Tumblr a shortcut to the hard things Tumblr had to learn in order to grow their business.

Confirmed: Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) Acquires Tumblr For “Approximately $1.1 Billion”

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) has confirmed in a blog post that they are acquiring Tumblr.  As we reported earlier, the deal is worth approximately $1.1 billion, mostly in cash.  Tumblr will operate independently with David Karp as the CEO. The deal is expected to close towards the second half of the year.

Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) Board To Meet About $1.1 Billion Cash Offer For Tumblr

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) is going to meet today to discuss the possibility of acquiring blogging service Tumblr for $1.1 billion, according to AllThingsD.  Tumblr currently hosts 108.2 million blogs and 50.8 billion posts.  Many of these blog posts contain inappropriate content so many Internet analysts are questioning whether this acquisition makes sense for a media company that has a sterling reputation.  The deal is not expected to be entirely in cash because Yahoo!’s stock price has been on the rise lately, largely due to the hiring of Marissa Mayer as CEO.
