Tumblr Raises $5 Million From Spark Capital and Union Square

Blog platform company Tumblr has raised $5 million from Spark Capital and Union Square. Tumblr currently has 4.5 million users and hits about 1 billion page views per month. Tumblr founder David Karp is not a fan of advertising so he is trying to find ways to make money through other forms, such as virtual stickers and premium themes. Tumblr is based in New York and was founded in 2007. The company raised a total of $10 million in funding.

Tumblr is attempting to make money through two methods. The first method is by charging $9 fee to have your blog featured in a directory. The newest way is by selling premium themes. Tumblr Hit 1 Billion Pageviews In February

Blog service Tumblr.com has hit some major milestones in February. The biggest milestone being 1 billion pageviews. Tumblr blogs have the ability to be quickly updated with photos and embedded videos without a complex system behind it. An infographic can be seen after the jump with all the stats compressed in one. Tumblr Hits 20 Million Uniques And 420 Million Impressions

David Karp did a presentation in Spain recently and reported some of the stats around the blogging service. Tumblr has over 2 million Tumblr bloggers, 40 million new posts per month, 420 million impressions, and 20 million visitors. On average Tumblr adds about 10,000 new people every day.
Tumblr has about 10 full-time employees. The company has about $5.25 million in funding. Karp said that they have about 2 years of runway left before running out of cash. Some of Tumblr’s users include John Legend, Katy Perry, etc. Tumblr has funding from Union Square Ventures, Betaworks, and Spark Capital.
Tumblr Launches Tumblupon Toolbar

Tumblr is a blogging service that is similar to Xanga, but encourages shorter posts. The service has grown so large that, they had to deal with 255 million pageviews this past July.
The company also had 50 million unique visitors, 650,000 posts per day added, 5,000 new users signing up everyday, and 1.5 reblogged posts added per second. Tumblr rivals another service called Posterous. However Tumblr is getting larger traffic numbers than Posterous.
Tumblr recently released an iPhone application that has support for audio recording and there is a popularity ranking system called Tumblarity.
Tumblr also recently launched a new feature called Tumblupon which works similarly to social media company StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon is a web toolbar where users can vote for interesting Tumblr posts. Based on a users’ “likes,” similar content will be recommend.
