Twitter desktop application software TweetDeck was taken down, but is now back online after a user in Australia discovered that he was able to access hundreds of Twitter and Facebook accounts. Twitter said that the accounts accessed were “random” and it wasn’t possible to target specific users because of the vulnerability. Twitter claims it did not involve getting a hold of account passwords so the accounts are safe. To make sure the situation is safe, TweetDeck is making users that were affected by the bug to re-log in to TweetDeck.

Twitter desktop application company TweetDeck has updated their software to include several new features and bug fixes. The new features include List Management, Activity & Interactions, and Inline Media.

TweetDeck Lists
Now you will be able to create, edit, and delete lists directly within TweetDeck. A dedicated Lists button has been added on the TweetDeck toolbar as well.

All user profiles now have a “Add or Remove lists” menu item, which makes it easier to manage lists memberships for any Twitter user.

Activities & Interactions
TweetDeck has added two columns to the application to make it possible to see additional activity on Twitter including favorites, follows, and retweets. The Interactions column is now available under the “Add Column” button. It is an enhanced Mentions column that shows only all of your mentions and alerts when you have been followed, added to a list, retweeted, or favorited.

Inline Media
TweetDeck now has inline media previews so that you can view images and videos faster and easily. You can see a small preview of images and videos under the tweet that is related to it. If you want to disable this option, click on Settings -> General.

When clicking on the preview image or the URL in the tweet for the video, the inline media will pop up in a large gallery view.

Retweets
After receiving feedback about how retweets are handled, TweetDeck replaced the “Quote” feature to an “edit & RT” feature that lets you edit the tweet before sending it out.

TweetDeck is a desktop application that allows you to update your status messages on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Google Buzz, Foursquare etc. TweetDeck has about 15 employees, mostly based in the United Kingdom. A large percentage of Twitter’s users prefer TweetDeck as their default application for sending out status messages.

Twitter and TweetDeck have a financial partnership in place as well. Twitter allows advertisers to post “promoted tweets” which appear in the search results of Twitter. These ads are allowed to appear in TweetDeck as part of a revenue-sharing agreement in place.

UberMedia’s social network would revolve around filling in the needs of people’s complaints over Twitter such as the length of a message. Twitter restricts messages to 140 characters or less.

Some of UberMedia’s most popular applications include UberSocial, Echofon, and Twidroyd. About 11.5% of all tweets are sent between UberMedia’s programs. And UberMedia is in talks for acquiring TweetDeck, the fourth most popular software used for sending out tweets.

Earlier this month, Chrysler fired their social media firm New Media Strategies because a tweet was sent out on behalf of the company that said “I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the #motorcity and yet no one here knows how to f**king [edited] drive.” This tweet was accidentally sent out by 28-year old Ferndale, Michigan resident Scott Bartosiewicz, who used TweetDeck as his default Twitter client.

TweetDeck has the ability to manage multiple Twitter accounts at once and Scott intended on sending the aforementioned tweet from his personal account instead of Chrysler’s account. Chrysler decided not to renew their contract with New Media Strategies as a result.

Bartosiewicz went to Detroit Catholic Central High School and Michigan State University for undergraduate studies. After that, he worked for D.O.C. Bartosiewicz got a job at New Media this past August and was sitting in traffic on highway I-696 when he sent out the tweet.

Bartosiewicz wasn’t the only one that was fired over a tweet recently. Celebrity actor Gilbert Gottfried was fired by AFLAC for writing insensitive tweets about the earthquake and tsunami that happened in Japan.

UPDATED: My source from the original article was incorrect. I have made some changes in this article based on a message I received from New Media Strategies.

TweetDeck is testing out a new service that would extend beyond Twitter’s 140 character limitation called Deck.ly. This is interesting because Twitter has been filling in holes in their services over the last year by creating products which would directly compete with third parties. Now TweetDeck is working filling in a hole that Twitter has in their whole business model.

“From day one [of Tweetdeck], it was one of the things almost everyone was screaming about … I’ve been very protective of the fact that [140 characters] is a platform limitation of the services we sit on top of and we have to have an element of respect for that. Going around that core tenet of Twitter could be a sensitive move. We don’t know how they feel about it. But we are tailoring to an audience that wants functionality the general user of Twitter doesn’t care about,” stated TweetDeck founder Iain Dodsworth.

All Deck.ly posts will be hosted by TweetDeck. TweetDeck users will simply see the longer tweet. Dodsworth said that TweetDeck is competing with Twitter on a daily basis and they are fighting for users that use the same service.
