Othman Laraki, the director of growth and international at Twitter, has announced a new feature called “Who To Follow.” Laraki said that every day thousands of people sign up for Twitter and they want to follow friends, businesses, celebrities, news sources, etc. However it takes some effort to find accounts that are similar to your interests.

Laraki said that in order to make it easier and faster for people with specific interests to get started on Twitter, they have started an experiment with tailored suggestions in several countries. The first experiment will be showing new users a list of accounts that they recommend to be followed along with a timeline filled with tweets from that account.

If you are a current user, you will see tailored suggestions in the “Who to follow” section. The tailored suggestions are based on accounts followed by other Twitter users. Twitter also uses data that they receive from Twitter buttons or widgets.

If you are logged into Twitter right now, you can see your tailored suggestions at this link.

Twitter’s involvement of the “Do Not Track” feature is part of a series of recent announcements by the company that is in favor of their users. In early May, Twitter had filed a court motion to protect the information about one of the users during the Occupy Wall Street protests. Twitter also announced the Innovator’s Patent Agreement that says that Twitter would never go on the offensive when it comes to their patents. Twitter owns the patent for the “pull to refresh” feature on iOS.

“We’re excited that Twitter now supports Do Not Track and global user adoption rates continue to increase, which signifies a big step forward for Do Not Track and the Web,” said Mozilla in a statement.

Square and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey went on Charlie Rose to talk about the two companies he runs. He also briefly talked about Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram. During the interview Dorsey said that mobile payments company Square is growing fast and is planning to expand internationally.

In the full interview, Dorsey said that Twitter COO Dick Costolo “is an amazing leader” and does not get enough credit for ensuring Twitter’s revenue products beat all of their goals set for the last year.

Charlie Rose also pointed out that Dorsey was an early investor in Instagram. Dorsey explained that Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom was an intern at Odeo where Dorsey built Twitter. Tim Berners-Lee, the “father” of the World Wide Web is arguing that the data that we provide to Internet silos like Google and Facebook are more valuable to the user on an individual basis compared to the firm. Berners-Lee said that we should be able to get our data back from Internet companies in a useful format. If users are not able to retrieve their data in a useful way, then they should fight for it.

“Well if it’s so valuable to these companies then why can’t I sell it? I don’t think it’s the value to a company,” said Berners-Lee in an interview with The Guardian. “My computer has a good understanding of my state of fitness, the things I’m eating, the places I’m eating, where I am, where I go, and so on. My phone understands from being, in my pocket, how much exercise I’ve been getting and how many stairs I’ve been walking up and so on. In fact, that’s completely valuable information for me to use. For me.”

Facebook has a “Download your Information” tool, but the data has been criticized for not being delivered in a format that is easy to parse.

Twitter has reassured developers and designers that they will never pursue other companies that use their “pull-to-refresh” feature that they have patented. I have seen this feature used on apps like Facebook and the mobile web browser version of Gmail. Twitter also announced the “Innovator’s Patent Agreement,” which assures that they will not use their patents against competitors.

“The IPA is a new way to do patent assignment that keeps control in the hands of engineers and designers. It is a commitment from Twitter to our employees that patents can only be used for defensive purposes. We will not use the patents from employees’ inventions in offensive litigation without their permission. What’s more, this control flows with the patents, so if we sold them to others, they could only use them as the inventor intended,” said Twitter in a blog post.

When Facebook bought out Instagram, they had outbid Twitter for a deal. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey was also an investor in Instagram and he tried to purchase the company before Facebook. Dorsey had used Instagram on a daily basis to send photos to Twitter, but since the deal has been announced he stopped using it.

Dorsey had joined Chris Sacca, Baseline Ventures, Benchmark Capital, and Adam D’Angelo in a $7 million Series A round. Dorsey saw a significant return on investment after the acquisition, but losing out on an acquisition deal to a competitor can be frustrating. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom made $400 million from the deal.

Twitter’s interest in the acquisition may have helped drive the price up quite a bit. Systrom said that the service is “not going away” and that they will be working with Facebook to evolve the service. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that they will continue to build on Instagram’s strengths.

The New York Times wrote a great back-story on how Instagram grew. After thousands of people started to download Instagram, the computer systems handling the photos had kept crashing and neither Kevin Systrom or Mike Krieger knew what to do. They called up former Facebook CTO Adam D’Angelo once the servers came crashing down. “Adam spent like 30 minutes on the phone with us,” said Systrom, “walking us through the basic things we needed to do to get back up.”

D’Angelo and Systrom met at Stanford seven years earlier at the Sigma Nu fraternity. D’Angelo helped Systrom find engineers, set up databases, and create features. Systrom also made connections when working as an intern at the company that became Twitter.

Systrom was introduced to Marc Andreessen when working at Google. In the spring of 2010 before Instagram was even born, Andreessen wrote him a check for $250,000.
