UStream iPhone Application Hits App Store With Live Streaming

The UStream iPhone application has hit the iTunes App Store and I’m shocked that it has live streaming. Before it was impossible to have live streaming on your iPhone unless the phone was jailbroken. Now the UStream Live Broadcaster is live and it doesn’t have to be on just WiFi, 3G is supported.
When the iPhone 3G S was released, one of the features Apple touted was the video recording capabilities. These videos could only be uploaded to UStream up until now. This is the first time I have heard of an approved iPhone application that supports video to be streamed on the web as it is being recorded.
The application has the ability to report where and when you are recording a video. This includes sending out tweets and Facebook messages. Geo-location is supported so that you can report where you are recording from. Qik has had a live-streaming application for a while, but it was not available on the App Store. Marc Horowitz and Peter Baldes Go On Virtual Road Trip Using Google Street View [Video]

Marc Horowitz and Peter Baldes went on a Google Maps Road Trip. This was the first cross country virtual road trip which took about 9 days. Marc and Peter explored the country using Google Street View and they used the arrows to drive across the country without actually physically driving a car. Marc has done many social experiments in the past.
The trip started in Los Angeles and the final destination was Peter’s actual house in Richmond, Virginia. The whole trip was broadcast on UStream. Pete was on his iPhone and used all of his 4,000 rollover minutes. The trip was made as realistic as possible. For example if the pair arrived at a landmark, they would pull up a YouTube video about it.
When they would stop at a restaurant on the virtual map, they would actually run out to a local fast food place and grab actual food and bring up the background of the restaurant and talk. When they would stop to sleep, the pair would call up a hotel. Since the whole broadcast was live on UStream, there was a chat room where people would enter and give some suggestions of places to go. Essentially the pair picked up about 150 “virtual hitchhikers.” A lot of people spent the whole trip with them in the chat room.
Ustream iPhone Application Allows You To Upload Recorded Video To The Web

Video recording service Ustream is best known for streaming live video on the web. To complement the web service, Ustream also launched an iPhone application so that users could watch services that are streaming on the website already. There was a rumor floating around that the company was planning to upgrade their application so that iPhone users could stream video themselves.
That rumor has become invalid after it was revealed that Ustream has announced a new application called Ustream Recorder. Ustream Recorder is a free application on the iTunes App Store that allows users to upload recorded video on the iPhone to the Ustream website.
The problem with streaming video from the iPhone is the bandwidth costs that AT&T has to deal with. AT&T has bandwidth caps which limits the power Apple can give to developers.
Along with the ability to upload video on the Ustream website, videos can be shared on Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook. Videos that you have already uploaded on Ustream can be edited and managed by the application too. To edit them, the videos have to be downloaded.
Revision3 COO David Prager Twitters & UStreams A Strange Man Entering His Home
David Prager seemed strangely calm when a strange man walked into his house and slept on his bed. Prager decided not to call the police, but decided instead to take a video and Twitter about the whole situation. While this situation was pretty entertaining for the Twitter and UStream community, I think that calling the police would have been the best thing to do. Regardless, below is some of the footage and some of the tweets that Prager sent out:

Rumor: UStream.TV Turning Down $50 Million From Microsoft; Wants To Work With VCs Instead

UStream.TV is a live, interactive video company that allows anyone with a fast Internet connection to stream and record shows. The company was founded by Brad Hunstable. UStream.TV is based in Los ALtos, Calif. Frank Cuafield and the Band of Angels are investors in UStream.TV. Caufield is a founder of Menlo Park, Calif. based venture capital company, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
Valleywag has a source that UStream.TV is turning down a $50 million bid from Microsoft and wants to work with a VC firm instead. Angel investor, Chris Yeh stepped in as CEO of UStream, but then gave the position to founder of Esurance founder, Chuck Wallace.
If Valleywag’s source is correct, then this would be a foolish move for UStream.TV. I think that $50 million overvalues UStream’s worth given their traffic measurements.
