Verizon Says Unlimited Plans Will End When Getting A New Subsidized Device

Verizon Wireless Logo
Earlier this week, some news organizations incorrectly reported Verizon’s plans for ending unlimited data plans. Verizon said that customers with unlimited plans will be able to keep them. However when shared data plans become available, the unlimited data option will no longer be available to customers when they buy a new device at a subsidized price. This means that people will not be grandfathered into their unlimited data plans if they want a new phone with a lower price. Below is a statement from Verizon as sent to The New York Times:

Verizon Plans To End Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plans

Verizon Wireless Logo
Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo said today that they are planning to end unlimited data plans when customers switch to a 4G phone. Shammo made the announcement at a JPMorgan conference. Verizon Wireless does not currently offer unlimited data plans for new customers. Some of the older customers have unlimited data plans that were grandfathered into their existing plans. Most of the older customers with unlimited data plans have 3G devices. When the older customers buy a 4G phone, Verizon will force them to sign up for a shared family data plan or tiered individual data plans.

Why Throttling Unlimited Data Plans Is Pointless

Validas has released a new study that claims that data throttling on wireless data plans does nothing to alleviate data congestion on the wireless network. AT&T and others have claimed that throttling is done on the top users of bandwidth on its network to ensure bandwidth is available for everyone. However Validas extracted data from 55,000 cell phone bills that belonged to AT&T and Verizon Wireless customers in 2011. The result of the bills is that throttling isn’t doing anything.
