At Max Speeds, You Could Consume 5GB Of Verizon LTE Data In 32 Minutes

PCMag conducted an interesting experiment. They tested out how long it takes to consume 5GB of data when maxing out their speeds. PCMag’s tests maxed out at 21Mbps and it would take only 32 minutes to consume 5GB. Verizon charges $50 per month to consume 5GB. “As the network evolves, other aspects around our offerings will evolve as well, and pricing is an aspect of that,” said Verizon CTO Tony Melone. Google And Verizon Launching Two New Android Phones, Powered With Google Voice

Apple may have decided to reject Google Voice, but Verizon Wireless plans to embrace the application. Google and Verizon have an Android partnership and the results of this deal will appear in the next few weeks. The first two Android powered phones will be available on Verizon later this year.

“You either have an open device or not, and this will be open,” stated Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam in a conference call with journalists today.

“In Verizon, somehow, the leadership has decided to embrace a very different philosophy, which works very, very well with the Internet,” added Google CEO Eric Schmidt on the conference call. Verizon and Google started their partnership discussion about 18 months ago. Verizon was the third telecommunications company to launch a phone on the Android operating system. T-Mobile and Sprint were the first two companies. Verizon is the largest wireless carrier based on the number of subscribers.

Above is a picture of the Samsung Rogue SCH-U960 (Glyde 2). This phone has a slide out four-row QWERTY keyboard, 3.0 megapixel camera with flash, Full HTML browser, and uses the TouchWiz UI. This phone has one-touch access for accessing popular social networking services sch as Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, and Facebook. This phoen also has access to V CAST VOD and V Cast Music. The Rogue also has SMS, MMS, Mobile IM, etc. Games that are pre-loaded on this phone include Need For Speed Undercover, Resident Evil: Degeneration, Tetris, and Dice.

The Samsung Intensity has a 2.1″ display with QWERTY a sliding keypad. There is also a mobile web browser, music player, 1.3 megapixel camera with Night Shot, Multishot, Self Time, and Shutter Sound selection. This phone is also compatible with V Cast Music. However over-the-air downloads are not available for this phone.

The Samsung Rogue can be bought for $99.99 with $100 mail-in rebate and a 2 year customer agreement. The Samsung Intensity is available for $29.99 after $50 mail in rebate and 2 year customer agreement.

Above is the first picture that has leaked from Verizon’s newest upcoming phone, the Motorola Shules powered by the Google Android operating system. The keyboard slides and the screen appears to be 3.7″ with 480×854 display. The camera is 5 megapixel with autofocus and has a flash. The phone is expected to hit the U.S. shores in October.

Verizon Reports a 21 Percent Drop in Profits – Plans to Offer Palm Pre

Verizon has reported a 21 percent drop in its 2Q profits. The drop was fueled by pension expenses and a decline in the company’s enterprise business. Verizon, which has more than 235,000 employees, said it will cut 8,000 jobs this year.

The company added 1.1 million mobile subscribers. It now has a total of 87.7 million subscribers. It also added 300,000 customers to its high speed fiber optic service. It now has 2.5 million FIOS TV customers and 3.1 million FIOS Internet customers.

Verizon also confirmed today that they plan to carry the Palm Pre early next year. The Pre has a six-month exclusive contract with Sprint. Verizon will likely carry the Pre when Sprint’s exclusivity ends.

Verizon to Offer Some Exclusive Cellphones to Small Wireless Companies

Verizon Wireless said Friday that it would shorten the length of exclusivity deals on cellphones. The company will allow a phone under exclusive contract to be sold by any small carrier with under 500,000 customers after six months.

Cell phone companies are facing pressure from the government because of their exclusive handset deals. Exclusivity deals restrict competition. Exclusive handsets are usually the hottest phones around. Therefore, smaller carriers lose customers to larger carriers such as Verizon.

Everyone knows about Apple’s iPhone exclusivity deal with AT&T. No other carrier in United States country can carry an iPhone. If a smaller carrier were allowed to carry the iPhone, their business would boom.

In a letter to lawmakers, Varizon said “Effective immediately for small wireless carriers (those with 500,000 customers or less), any new exclusivity arrangement we enter with handset makers will last no longer than six months — for all manufacturers and all devices.”
